  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Twinkle: thoughts please

I've just come back from the vets with twinkle who has been seeing her for the last few weeks with suspected snuffles. And she's been discharged without improvement until after xmas

Although only once since i've had her i spotted nasal discharge she has been having bouts of sneezing, upto 30 in a row sometimes

She has had baytril for the last week which hasn't made any difference at all so now the vet is thinking its not a bacterial infection. She's mentioned a foreign body, root canal problem or allergy :?

She is very lively, healthy apart from the sneezing and has put on a bit of weight too, so the vet is reluctant to do anything as she doesn't appear ill.

The choices are, do nothing and hope it gets better by itself, try septrin, send her to a rabbit specialist for tests as they dont have the equipment at my surgery (obviously this would be really expensive though and I'm broke :( ).

what do you think?

could you maybe write a diary of exactly what she eats / sleeps on / comes into contact with and when and when / if she sneezes, any other symptoms etc. then if she gets better then thats great but if not you have a diary to maybe help eliminate any allergy or show that it isnt allergy related ????????

dont know if that really makes sense but i know what i mean

fingers crossed twinkle feels better soon (((((vibes)))))

I'm not sure about the allergy because she sneezes outdoors too, and she has barley straw, meadow hay, wood pelleted cat litter out there.

can rabbits get winter allergies like humans? something to do with the winter allergens producing 'cold like symptoms'? dont know if buns can get that though :?

Try Septrin
As I have said before my Vet never uses Baytril for respiratory tract infections as she feels it is unlikely to be of any use.

At Bobtails rescue I saw a bunny which had only shredded paper in its enclosure. One of the girls there told me that it was allergic to hay! Winter allergies are often caused by fungal spores, i.e. from mould. Not sure if bunnies can get that.

I did mention that I'd been told baytril wasn't much good for snuffles and septrin was better but she seemed to think it would have made some difference :?

Can septrin cause more side effects to rabbits than baytril?

No, its just not licensed for use in Rabbits. Baytril is really the only one that is so less confident Bunny Vets always opt for it rather than prescribing 'off licence'.

no I havent seen that, where is it I can't find it!

edit: found it. Yes the vet did mention the possibility of a foreign object but thought it unlikely as there isn't any discharge! :?
