Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Infected scent glands

Azraelm

One of my sisters rabbits was having treatment for sore/infected scent glands when she adopted him.

He was put on baytril for 5 days. It is still red and looks sore and she has been told to bath the area in cooled, salted boiled water, then dry it thoroughly and put vaseline on.

Does this sound right do you think?

Hi,

I'm no vet but I would use Sudocrem which they use for babies who have nappy rash etc. It is good for lots of things like this.

I take it the vet has said that 5 days of Baytril was enough?

Best wishes to bunny

Yes!!
Some Aloe Vera Gel would be soothing too.

Edited to add that my Vet never likes to give short courses (3-5 days) of antibiotics and always gives a minimum of 7 days. This is to minimise the risk of antibiotic resistence developing.

thanks guys, I was wondering if there was a cream that might be useful.

Where can you buy aloe vera gel please Jane?

I think he's due back at the vets again soon, so i'll suggest she mention the antibiotics.

I got mine from Christobel (she is very in to complimentary 'natural' treatments)
But you can buy it in Health Food Stores and some Chemists

When Alice was sore around that area, I cleaned it with very diluted Hibiscrub to get rid of the bacteria, then put some of the Fucithalmic gel on. Sudocrem, as mentioned before is good for sore skin, as is vaseline, but I think the fucithalmic has some kind of steroid in it as well.

Just wondering, but have they been cleaned out already? Mineral oil is the best for that. This is the first time I've heard of scent glands getting infected so I don't know much more than that.
