Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Ulcer on Cornea!

Hi there,

I took Alice to the vets last Friday to get her eye sorted out because she had stopped eating from the pain it was really sore looking and runny. The vet found "pustules on the conjunctiva", basically little white spots on the inside of her eyelid. Alice was given Metaclopromide and we were prescribed Exocin eye drops and oral Baytril for 10 days.

I took her back for a check on Monday and the eye was not much better, during this visit the vet found an ulcer on her cornea and gave us fake tears to put in 4 times a day.

Does anyone know what causes this? Could it be all the antibiotics and eye drops that she has had over the years? Could it be related to the ear abscess she has just had? :?

They did say that a solution could be to stitch her third eyelid over until the ulcer heals. I really don't want to go down this route because this would make Alice blind until it healed. I would hate to put her through that kind of trauma as she can hardly hear...I feel this would be quite cruel.

How long does this type of thing take to heal, if at all?

I'm really worried about my little girl, it's been one thing after another for the past two years and we've ben making almost weekly visits to the vets. I just want it to be sorted so she can live out her days happily! :(

Poor Alice  so sorry she's having such a rough time of it. I've seen this sort of procedure carried out in dogs but never rabbits so can't really help - sorry. Best to be guided by your vet as to the best course of action. Hope she soon starts to improve. Sending lots of healing vibes for Alice and hugs for you x

Runnybabbit's Giant Harry had an ulcer on his cornea just over a week ago. The eye specialist at our vets treated it with Tiacil and Maxitrol for a week and it has cleared up brilliant. We were worried as Harry had had alot of dental and mouth trouble prior to him getting the ulcer and thought this was just another infection connected but it had nothing to do with it.
Good luck and hope all goes well :D

Thanks for your replies. We're going back to the vets on Friday morning so I'll mention it to them and see if we can treat Alice with the same.
Excuse my ignorance, but are they antibiotic eye drops?

Tiacil is an antibiotic and Maxitrol is a locally acting steroid

Ulcers are caused by trauma to the eye. Most small ulcers respond very well to topical treatment but huge ones just will not so the only option is a 3rd eylid flap, which they dont even seem to notice, you say if she had it done she will be blind, is her eyesight compromised in the other eye too? I've seen it done in a bunny once and it worked really well.

Thanks for all your replies.

Alice only has one eye!!

I don't think it was a large ulcer so I'm hopeful that we can treat it successfully without having to think about anything so drastic for her. I'll definately speak to the vet about treating her with the Tiacil and Maxitrol and we'll have a go with those.

I'll keep you posted. :bunny:

As kayj mentioned Harry had exactly the same thing and after treatment he seems to be fine.

The eye specialist at our vets did say that if it didn't work that he could operate to remove the ucler, it would be an expensive procedure but he felt confident that it would be possible to remove it.

Fingers crossed for Alice, give her a nose rub from me.

Hi Guys,

Alice got some Tiacil eye drops on Friday and they flushed her tear ducts. At first, it seemed like they hadn't flushed as usual, but over the weekend her nose turned yellow, which was the dye that they used to colour the ulcer on her eye!!! The flushing left her eye very red and swollen so I had some local anaesthetic to drop into it twice a day, was using the fake tears, Tiacil and oral Baytril. It was a confusing weekend with which drugs when but we got through it. :?

We had to go back to the vets this morning for a check and they are pleased with her progress. The eye infection seems to be clearing up but the ulcer is still there. They think it should start reducing in size soon though. Last Friday they also debrided the surface of her eye to encourage new cells so the ulcer could heal so hopefully this will work.

Alice is fine in herself, even though she looked like she'd gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson - grumpy and stampy as ever so I know she's feeling ok. It's time to worry when she's subdued!!

Gemma xx
