Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Myxi questions please

Hello

A colleague has just mentioned to me she used to have a rabbit and has a hutch she no longer needs. I was thinking of buying it off her to use and give Pickle and his soon to be acquired girlfriend an extension to their hutch.

Problem is her rabbit died of myxi. She never bothered to get the rabbit vaccinated  and doesnt understand the need for it   :? :?

Anyway, question is - is it safe to use this hutch now? If it is safe does it need special cleaning? Is there ANY chance this could be dangerous to any other bunny living in it as I would be devestated if I used it and then my bunnies died.

Also, how do rabbits get myxi in the first place if they are not wild bunnies?

Many thanks

Myxi is mainly spread by blood sucking insects e.g. flies/fleas/ticks. These can travel a fair distance and be transported on dogs/cats/hedgehogs/foxes even humans!

Myxi can be spread by contact with discharge from an infected rabbit but that's not as much of an issue.

As a standard precaution any second hand hutch should be cleaned with strong disinfectant e.g. virkon (ask your vet is they stock sackets). Once you've done that then it should be fine to use with your bunny :)
