Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Myxi jabs

Hi

How often do you have your rabbits vaccinated against myxi!?

The vet I used to use vacinated mine twice yearly and I've just moved to a vet nearer home (but still within the same area as my old vets) and they only vaccinate against it yearly!?

Thanks
Lian

My vet asked me what kind of area I lived in i.e. whether there were wild rabbits nearby, as live in a residential area yearly was "ok", but for it to be done in the spring to offer the best protection during the summer months when the risks are higher.

If you are worried, or live in a rural area then I would get it done twice yearly? I'm sure some more knowledgable people will be along later with advice.

Surely its up to you as their owner? :?

My vet advised every 6 months as there's lots of myxi in the area-

it is particuarily important to renew the jab around march time, if the first one was done in winter as obviously there's many more fleas etc around in the summer.

I'm sure they would let me do it twice yearly but if they only advise yearly, it might not be necessary twice a year?

It depends on the risk.
Vaccs are not 100% effective, but having them more often will increase the effectiveness (if that makes sense).

If you know myxi is in your area, it might make sense to have it twice a year. If your rabbits are house buns, once a year may be enough.
Your vet should be able to talk you through it, and let you know the risks

i get mine done twice yearly, used to get it yearly on advice from old vet but when i joined a new practice they advised twice yearly..i'd rather be safe than sorry (although i know not 100% effective)....bunnies can't be overdosed on it (so my new vet says).
