Scent Gland

I just wondered if anybody as ever had a bun with an over active scent gland. Hiedi my Giant French bun stinks. I noticed the very strong smell yesterday and brought her in to investigate. I noticed all on one side was quite yuk and it was coming from her scent gland, as looked in the area of the gland I noticed a littletiny pin head with a yukky thick creamy stuff coming out and this seemed to be the smell. I just wondered if anybody had had experience of this before I phone my vet which I will do anyway.
When I say the smell was bad it was still in the house when I came from putting her back.
Thank you in advance.xx

Hello,

I think sometimes their glands just get a bit bunged up. Even when they're "clean" they still stink - yes I've had to open windows after having them inside for a freshen up

When I clean them I just take out some of the thick creamy goo with a cotton bud - have a go at this and see if it helps.

Good luck - its a nasty job!

Not sure if it's the same thing but a while ago Alice had "smelly bits" and was very red and swollen around her "lady bits" area. I took her to the vets and they gave me hibiscrub to clean out her glands and some fuciderm to help the soreness. This seemed to clear it up and it was put down to her getting too warm on her underneaths and was causing a build up of bacteria. I haven't had any trouble with her since...

Thank you. I do use hibiscrub, cotton buds and also fuciderm. It is definately producing more than the other side as it is all over one side. I am going to phone my Vet this morning.

When I’ve got a rabbit with really smelly scent glands I make a warms solution up of Lavender water and clean them with cotton buds using the solution. Lavender smells nice, is a mild disinfectant and is very soothing to sore/inflamed skin.

I have left a message for my vet as she is in consults at the moment and she will ring me back, I would rather wait to see what she says before I do anything else. Thanks for the tip though Louise and I will mention it to my vet to see what she says about using it. :D
