A question for rescues.....

I was just wondering about how people got into running rescues? (particulary the people who have the rescues buns at their house)
Is it something you've always wanted to do? or did you just start fostering and it escalated? Do you commit full time, or have another job?

Sorry, I was just curious. I think you all do a fab job anyway!!! :D :D :D

I started fostering last April, now I have my own rescue at my home!! I also work part-time at home as a childminder, I spend many hours a week devoted to my rabbits. I currently have 19 rabbits in my rescue.

I started fostering last February when I lost one of my buns Rolo a rabbit that I had rescued 3 years before, I took some unwated hutches to my local rescue for them to use and I came out with half a dozen buns

Well, it wasn't quite as bad as that, I took some hutches over and looked round Janes Rabbit Rescue in Warwick and saw all the brilliant work she was doing and thought that maybe I could help in some small way and so a week or two later when Jane and Alan had visited my house I started to foster, I also rescue and nurse the bunnies, if needed, and I find it very rewarding.

I also work full time 6 days a week, 12 hours a day and I only ever get a Monday off when I have to catch up with all my paperwork!!

But I do have excellent support from my OH who is retired and looks after the buns all day, which is brilliant

Jane also works full time and has the support of her OH Alan, without whom she couldn't do as much as she does!

I started after being involved in transporting rescue dogs and realising how overlooked bunnies are..even by some rescues :( ..I already had 3 of my own and started by rehoming one "at risk" free ad bun..to my next door neighbour!...then thought I'd start up myself...

..if you are thinking about it please..please think carefully first....it does take a lot of time and money..is often emotionallly draining ...and you MUST do it properly..
I think people wanting to help animals is brilliant but unfortunately some go into it without careful forethought and there have been instances of rabbits having to be rescued from "rescues"..where the people have started with the best of intentions but then things run away with them....setting a limit is a MUST or the bunnies end up suffering ...as well as your own life.
Also if you are considering helping one or two from home..then please make sure you can afford to have them neutered BEFORE you rehome them and your knowledge on care/sexing/bonding is high ...or sadly you'll be adding to the problem..

If you haven't got the finances or confidence to go on your own then why not ask about fostering for your local rescue?...most would be so grateful for the help and then you have all the back-up you need. It means they are able to take in extra bunnies.

Thats really good advice, thanks. I certainly wouldn't want to jump in and fill up the house and garden with bunnies!
I work full time at the mo, and I'm wanting to do my top-up degree fairly soon. I had thought about fostering, but I'm obviously thinking about time and space. I've now got 5 buns of my own, 1 of them I rescued. I was also thinking about volunteering at a local rescue in my free time, helping with the day to day stuff.

I wouldn't claim to be an expert and know everything. Rabbits are incredibly interesting animals, and I've been swotting up on behaviour, anatomy, pharmacology etc mainly to be a better owner for my own buns. I've still got a lot to learn though.

Thanks to everyone who replyed to the post! :D

Nicola, I would definitely recommend volunteering at a rescue. There's something immensely satisfying aobur mucking out shedloads of buns  and of course they need cuddles too :D

Nicola do go along and offer to help at your local rescue I'm sure they would be grateful...cleaning out hutches, litter trays etc all takes time...and there is also the job of cuddling the bunnies and helping to socialise the frightened and/or aggressive ones..

I stated rescueing for the Animalsamaritons 4 yrs ago. It wasent long before i started wanting to take in more than they did. They take in all animals so didnt want to have too many rabbits. Then i started my own rescue but still do theres as well. Im at home all day otherwise i wouldnt be able to cope with the numbers i have. val
