  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

It's not him who has made the mum pregnant though is it?? :?:?

thats what i can gather by the post, as they wasent sure what the sex was then the update said the mum is now pg so it must be a boy.

Yes, they seem to be inzest babies. :D Even humans can get pregnant very soon after they have given birth, so she should think that rabbits can, too. Maybe someone should e-mail her.

a female bunny can get pregnant again four hours after giving birth

To be honest I'm not sure where you start with someone who sexes their rabbits by seeing if they get each other pregnant or not and then finding it amusing when they do. If she had been at all concerned she could have just popped down her vet and got the rabbit sexed rather than leaving him with his Mum and at 5months little boys are usually fairly evident. Maybe explaining how many buns are sat in rescues waiting for homes after having suffered terrible things in the past might encourage her not to allow her buns to produce unplanned litters but - I'm not sure :?

Hope no one minds, but I did send an email this morning as the ad was posted on the 19th and if the bun was showing clear signs of pregancy she must have been really close, and may have already given birth.

I explained to them the importance of spilting him away and the fact they can breed so soon after birth and the dangers of inbreeding and back-to-back litters on the doe and instead to go to the vets and have them sexed for free or a small fee as if this offspring interbred there could be serious mental and/or physical problems, mainly teeth malformations etc.

I also wrote about the benefits of neutering and that if he was neutered now he could live with his mum as soon as she had been spayed after recovering from the current litter. I also pointed out with reference to this site about the big overpopulation problem of rabbits and the fact most rabbit rescues are run entirely by public donations and are briming with rabbits.

I sent her a few other links, one to the spaying article on this site etc so I hope I got my message across as I tried to show her support and wished her luck, and can only hope that because I didn't jump down her throat like I wanted to, I somehow managed to stay civil throughout, so I hope she will respond with a positive attitude and will change her views . Will keep you all updated.
