Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Why bald under the chin?

Any ideas?

Maisie occasionally has gone bald and sore under her chin. Its because she drinks from a bowl and puts her chin in the bowl and it became wet. When it became sore, the fur dropped out. We applied Fucidin and it cleared up. Now when we see she has had a drink, we pat her dry and it seems to work.

Polly has a water bottle and haven't noticed it looking sore or wet :? I think there might be a few hairs on it now, but it's been there a few weeks and initially seemed to be getting bigger, but I am hoping it is starting to grow back. Would like to try and work out what is causing it though...

Is she spayed? Sometimes female buns will pluck fur from under their chins to line a nest. If there's no nest, it's possible she's pulled some fur and just distributed it rather than made a nest with it

Hi,

Yes, she is neutered (and lives with her neutered sister - who has no bald patches!). They were neutered in early September, just before we got them.

It doesn't look sore or crusty. I though it might be slightly flaky but on closer inspection it looked more like the bits of white I could see are some hairs starting to re-grow. I will have another look tonight.

I have found odd tufts of hair around the cage, but not a lot. Polly (baldy  ) has more of a dewlap that Sybil - it is kind of under her chin that is baldy, would she be able to pull the hairs out from here?

if its a little flaky it could be a parasite or fungal infection, strange place to get one but a possibility! Amy had a bold slightly flaky patch under her chin and the vet was going to test for ringworm, her's started when it got wet though!

Evo's been like that ever since I've had him....in exactly the same place. He had all sorts of tests for ringworm and parasites, creams, the works.....never got rid of it though! His isn't quite as big as that, maybe the size of a penny.
