  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Is there anything a human can catch....

From a rabbit?

I know its a stupid question but when I was little, the vet told me off for kissing Smudge's nose, face etc Its never put me off but.....

I've caught a cold from my work colleague, I'm certain of that but Monday, Chico had the vets and I've been kissing his nose and head, he had a Myxi Vax as well.

Tuesday, my lips had swollen and their all blistered and cracked

Is it possible I picked up something from Chico, could I have got a bit of Myxi vaccine on my lips or have I just got a virus :?:

well, I must admit that I never actually kiss either of mine but I am a bit odd like that....sounds like there could be a link possibly?

Very few things... ring worm although you're probably more likely to give it to your bun than the other way around. I think the cold sore virus can switch between. Colds can't though. Technically pastrella can be caught by people but I think there has only been one case of that. The RWA did an article on it in their magazine a while back but I don't think they came up with many. Unless you have a condition effecting your immune system kissing your rabbit is pretty safe. You're more likely to catch something kissing a person ;)

That said you probably shouldn't kiss them after treating them with flea/mite treatments. Myxi vacc should be under the skin so I wouldn't have thought that was an issue.
