  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ronnie's Worse :(

On monday Ronnie was found with about 5 claws missing couldn't see where he had caught them the vet said as long as he stops bleeding he will be ok and can be checked over on his appointment wednesday.

Turns out he chewed them off and has chewed one toe down to the bone

now he's on metacam and he's had an injection of antibiotics if he gets better or stabalises he will need his toe tidying up.
The pain relief stopped him eating his toe he can't be on pain relief forever?

Vet said it could be the parasite caused leisons on his brain causing brain damage or it could be a tumor on his spine.

I have been given a choice whether I wish to continue with treatment.

Any advice please I don't want him to suffer but I don't want to loose him has anyone else had this problem and what was the outcome.

Without a confirmed diagnosis its difficult to say what is going on for Ronnie.

The parasite your vet mentioned is probabaly Encephalitizoon Cuniculli (EC) but I have never heard of self-trauma to be a symptom of it.
Without an X-ray/Ultra-sound a spinal tumour can't be diagnosed.

It would seem that as Metacam stopped the self-trauma to his foot Ronnie must have had pain in that area. Maybe arthritis?

I would ask the Vet about some diagnostic tests before making any decisions. If Ronnie is still eating and not depressed then I dot think you should give up on him getting better yet.
