  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

advice on cutting buns claws

mitsy

New Kit
my bun needs his claws cutting.
i don`t really want to go to the vets unless i really have too coz he hates it and to be honest i am not too keen on the idea
is there any advice you could give to cutting them myself?
is it safe? or should i just give in and take him to the vets? :?

Yes, you can cut them yourself. If your bun has white nails it's really easy. I use a nail clipper made for a small dog. It works really well. Some people like using human nail clippers but I think they squeeze the nail too much.

Look for the pink part- that's the blood vessel called the "quick." Don't cut it. If you do accidentally cut it, don't worry. It's only a little twinge of pain. Just put a little cornstarch or flour on it to stop the bleeding. This site has a diagram and instructions:

I've found it's easiest to have one person hold the bun while the other trims the nails. If you don't have a second person who could do that, wrap the bun up in a towel and move one paw out of the towel for clipping at a time.

It also helps to remember that while you might let your rabbits bounce all over you at other times, right now YOU are in charge. Be firm but gentle and don't let a fussing bun take advantage of you.

Good luck!
