  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Blood filled testicle?

Fairy Angel

Alpha Buck
Smurf was castrated two and a half weeks ago and now one of his testicle sacks has filled with blood. The vets aren't doing anything except checking him twice weekly. I think they're hoping it will re-absorb back into his body without them having to drain it, but this doesn't seem to be happening :? They are worried about the risk of infection if they have to drain it. Has anyone got any ideas on how to treat this or why it happens?

A degree of haematoma is within normal parameters after an operation. It should be gone by 4 weeks from the op, before that long don't worry. I think this tends to happen more to the lads with larger sacs. Salvador has a huge pair of swollen sacks still over two weeks after his op, but his were soooooooo big beforehand  As long as the rabbit is eating and pooing try not to worry. If it seems to be painful and/or he doesn't feel like eating get your vet to give you some metacam for him to reduce the swelling and pain.

He may be alergic to the suture material. Some Metacam should help reduce inflammation. Arnica gel is useful for haematomas (bruising)

I don't think he is allergic as it has only happened in one testicle and not the other :? We are going back to the vets again on Tuesday but it does not bother him at all, he is his usual self :D Fingers crossed I think it has gone down a little, but the poor boy is getting fed up of me prodding his bits
