View Full Version : The Late Lord Lopsley-26th Sept- Christabel Contacting FHB

21-09-2006, 07:00 AM
I fear the worst for Lopsley
Nothing confimed yet but he is displaying symptoms I have, sadly, seen before
Thankfully I do have some HEALTHY bouncy Buns here as with Unky A and this yet-to-be-confirmed problem for Lord Lopsley I feel somewhat drained.
But I knew what I was letting myself in form by having so many Bunnies.
I just wish I could work miracles for the poorly ones....

21-09-2006, 07:59 AM
What symptoms is he displaying Jane? :(

21-09-2006, 08:03 AM
In the nicest way I hope you're wrong :)

21-09-2006, 08:22 AM
What symptoms is he displaying Jane? :(

He has a 'dropped' abdomen and a boney spine. It looks like his belly is filling with fluid. He is much quieter now and although he eats well he looks in poor condition.
I have a feeling the 'attempting to get the Velveteen Breed Standard' has created a Bun with a heart too small to cope with the demands of a big body

His heart-rate is normal but his heart sounds are not.
I am going to arrange for him to have some tests next week but I wont be at all surprised, although I will be devastated, if he goes the same way as your lovely Drake.....

21-09-2006, 08:42 AM
oh no Jane, I'm so sorry. I really hope that he is ok

21-09-2006, 08:42 AM
Aaaw so sorry Jane, hope you are wrong (in the nicest way).

21-09-2006, 09:00 AM
Have you contacted his breeder? She/he will need to know to warn other owners or to stop breeding this line.
I'm so sorry hun! I'm keepnig my fingers crossed for our lovely Lopsley x

21-09-2006, 09:02 AM
Awww hope he's ok

21-09-2006, 09:08 AM
Thinking of you Jane, and LL

21-09-2006, 09:10 AM
I've just sent an email to a lady I know who breeds them to see if it's something she has come across in the breed or if it's just bad luck, I'll let you know what they say. Please get better LL, we love you to pieces.

I will do so if my fears are confirmed.
Trouble is the last time I was in this situation with two Rex Brothers with Congenital Heart disease I contacted the breeder(NOT Lopsley's) and was told to F' off
She is continuing to breed from the same line :x Beautiful Rabbits with a maximum life expectancy of 2 years.....

Brill', thanks so much.

21-09-2006, 10:22 AM
Coould he of been the runt like Drakey? All his litter buddies seem to be ok.

21-09-2006, 11:08 AM
Wishing his Lordship all the very best xxx

21-09-2006, 02:13 PM
I hope he's alright. And I so hate when I hear breeders say that purebred rabbits have shorter lifespans than crosses and continue to inbreed them. I've heard of so many flemish and french lops dying young over here.

21-09-2006, 02:29 PM
Giant breeds don't live as long as smaller rabbits anyway, just as great danes generally don't in the dog world.

21-09-2006, 03:20 PM
awww, i'm sorry you are worried about lord lopsley  the big bunnies can be such a wory can't they? I'm taking Storm to the vet again tomorrow

21-09-2006, 05:06 PM
Aww, sending lots of vibes to Lord Lopsley.

21-09-2006, 08:18 PM
Sending vibes...

21-09-2006, 09:51 PM
I hope everything works out well for lord Lopsley.

22-09-2006, 01:22 AM
on no Lord Lops, come on little guy :( ur far 2 loved 2 go already, hope all goes well with tests

22-09-2006, 02:24 PM
If fluid is collecting has the vet given him frusamide? I have a guinea pig with a heart problem and this has helped her tremendously. She is back to her usual perky self after scaring me that she was going to drop dead several times  She has lost a fair bit of weight, but I reckon that is the fluid gone from her abdomen.

How Disgraceful breeding these rabbits knowing of this problem :x

22-09-2006, 03:12 PM
Gosh how awful, breeding rabbits with a life expectancy of 2 years

Vibes for LL x

I have had a couple of Rexes with CHD and frusemide was part of their drug regime. It certainly helped. Until Lopsley has a definitive diagnosis we dont want to risk 'treating blind' so to speak.

I will be VERY surprised if he makes it to his 1st Birthday on 1st March 2007......

Oh dear, people messing with nature....

22-09-2006, 09:40 PM
 sorry Jane xxxx

23-09-2006, 05:09 AM
Lopsley is now eating less :( He is increasingly lethargic and I am sure there is a serious problem, as yet we dont know what.
He is still on treatment for his ear infection but I dont believe it is that causing him to appear to be in such poor condition
I am VERY worried about him  He is having blood tests on Monday.

23-09-2006, 08:04 AM
Oh Jane I am so sorry. Poor Lopsley. I have everything crossed for you both :(

23-09-2006, 11:46 AM
awww  come on Lord Lopsley, You're not allowed to be poorly.
I really hope that the blood tests show something which can be treated, or better still I hope they will give him the all clear. What a worry

24-09-2006, 03:28 PM
He is only eating grass now. He is Sooooooo thin  and weak
He is still on treatment for his ear infection but its not working
He is on analgesia and I am now going to supplement the tiny amount he is eating with Critical Care.
Contacting the non-Rabbit savvy Vet today would achieve no more than I am already doing.
If Lord Lopsley lasts the night he will see Christabel tomorrow

Not sure I can cope with this......

24-09-2006, 03:32 PM
Oh Jane - you must be absolutely exhausted with all this going on.

We are all praying for the lovely Lord Lopsley to pull through and start climbing conservatories again.

24-09-2006, 03:38 PM

24-09-2006, 05:21 PM
Jane so sorry to hear this. Sadly my bun Crosby, who was from a breeder who gave his surplus stock into Nottingham rescue, had the same symptoms...he too was a result of very bad breeding and was not strong enough to fight off any infection...I lost him 2 months ago
Hopefully Christabel will be able to help Lopsley...fingers and paws crossed xx

24-09-2006, 06:01 PM
Oh jane     I have everything crossed for your baby boy. All the healing vibes I can find coming to Lord Lopsley xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

24-09-2006, 10:35 PM
Jane ((hugs)) I hope he is feeling much better soon, lots of healing vibes on there way to him...

24-09-2006, 11:13 PM
All the best tomorrow Jane. All paws crossed for the Lord Lops. I am so sorry that his health has declined so rapidly. :( Please let him know that we want him to get to see Christabel if he can at all manage it. He may only be eating hay, but at least he is still eating. A bunny who wants to eat is a bunny who wants to live.

25-09-2006, 08:39 AM
Jane, so sorry I have only just caught up with this. How is the gorgeous Lord Lopsey today?

25-09-2006, 09:10 AM
I hope he gets better! He's still only a young'un.

25-09-2006, 09:25 AM
I hope it goes ok at the vets today x

25-09-2006, 09:59 AM
Lopsley is at the Vets now. Had to take him to the main Surgery and Christabel will meet him over there (No X-ray equipment at branch surgery)
Lopsley will be having a head/chest/abdominal X-ray and a full blood work up.
I am not at all optomistic. My poor baby  All last night he just wanted to be cuddled

Jake is at the branch surgery waiting for Christabel's return to de-plum him. Poor lad.

25-09-2006, 10:02 AM
Fingers crossed for Lord Lopsley... sending positive vibes.

Happy Hopping
25-09-2006, 12:19 PM
Jane, this is so sad. I can't believe cancer can kill a bunny so young of age. I mean, unless it is genes related from his parent, it's hard to imagine what could cause such cancer to strike Lord Lopsley, as I always thought the first few years of a rabbit's life is their strongest year. This is so shocking. I'm so sorry this happened to Lord Lopsley.

If you are too upset, take a deep breath, drink some hot tea, and call some of your friends to come by to keep you company for a while.

25-09-2006, 01:07 PM

We all thinking of you. Such a terrible shock for all of us. We are all here if you need us and nothing is too much trouble. Hop free Lopsley, your star shone all too briefly.

25-09-2006, 01:33 PM
Oh Jane I'm so sorry, life can be very cruel sometimes. I suppose grief is the price we pay for letting our gorgeous animals into our lives for however long we are lucky enough to have them. He isn't in pain anymore. They'll all be together at the Bridge having a great time...

Jane, I've only just caught up with all this... I can't believe the little monster's gone.  I'm thinking of you at this very sad time.

I loved hearing about his antics and crazy moments, like hanging off a tea towel on the washing line by his teeth, and climbing onto the neighbour's roof. I think everyone on the forum will miss his madness.

Binky free, Lopsley, get up to loads of mischief at the Bridge.

25-09-2006, 08:25 PM

Because of the extremely shocking nature of my big baby Lop's demise (still cant take it in     ) Christabel is going to contact Frances Harcourt-Brown to see if she has ever encountered such an unusual and tragic case.
It wont bring my baby back but getting some answers MIGHT help me come to terms with things.....

26-09-2006, 05:51 PM
aw jane honey  lets hope you can find some comfort in whatever is discovered. but know this; lord lopsley couldnt have had a more loving fun home than the one he had with you, and love lasts forever even if physical bodies are taken too soonxxx

26-09-2006, 06:15 PM

Any update Jane? And sorry for being so bloned, but who's Frances Harcourt-Brown? (read thisposting ages ago and didnt want 2 look stoopid by askin  but it's been puzzlin me since)

27-09-2006, 06:29 PM
Frances Harcourt-Brown (otherwise known as FHB if you see that written anywhere  ) is one of the country's top rabbit vets. She has written a book called 'textbook of rabbit medicine' and continues to take a keen interest in rabbit medicine :D

27-09-2006, 10:05 PM
Ah thanks - god I can't even spell blond

things are worse than I thought!
