  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mystery death

Oh dear poor bunny
You dont mention if he had been pooing and eating his NORMAL amount in the days before his untimely passing?
If he had reduced gut motility he may eventually have gone into GI stasis. Without IMMEDIATE Veterinary attention this can be fatal

Was he vaccinated against VHD? VHD is another cause of sudden death. Although the situation you describe, particularly the 'lying down all the time' sounds more like GI stasis to me.

Here is some info' about stasis http://www.houserabbit.co.uk/rwf/articles/GI_stasis_pet.htm

Was he eating/pooping - rabbits can die in 12-24 hours of gut problems.

Was he vaccinated? Could possibly be VHD. If that is a possibility you need to clean yourself throughly before going near your rabbits and she needs to use vet grade disinfectant on everything that he may have come in contact with.

It doesn't sound like a stroke really, it's very unlikely in a rabbit that age and you'd see weakness along one side not the backlegs.

It could have been heat stroke but I wouldn't have thought it would have got too hot yesterday providing he had water and shade.

The only way to tell for certian is a post mortum - vets usually charge about £10-20 for a very basic one where they look at the organs. That should identify a gut problem/stroke or anything effecting the major organs.
