  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I had my male rabbit, Simba, neutered 3 months ago and the girls, Sooty and Tinkerbell, spayed 2 weeks ago. The girls aren't bonded. I want to bond Simba to one of the girls. He lives outside at the moment and the girls are free range indoors.

The vet has told us to wait about 4 weeks before attempting any bonding to allow hormones to settle down. I had heard, prior to this, that bonding could be tried after 2 weeks to enable the girl to fully recover from her spay.

Is there a big difference in hormone levels whether waiting 2 or 4 weeks?

To be honest Id leave it as long as possible - my vet told me at least three weeks after castrating the boys before putting them back together, tried after 3 weeks, and again after 5 weeks, and on both occasions the hormone levels were still too high and they were agrresive, was actually 7 weeks before I got them back together.

I'd give her as long as possible - remember she's just had major surgery and may not be ready

The vet told me 8 weeks after a spay but I felt Pippa was so much calmer and after 4 weeks we tried her with MJ and it was fine. That's the limit of my experience so can't offer any advice as such, other than you know your rabbits and when you feel they're ready they may well be.
