  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

H & H had there 1st myxi vaccs a few months ago, and Im sure the vet said to go back in a year. Since then tho Ive read it should be done every 6 months. WHich is true? What does everyone else do?

Depends on your area. If the vet said come back in a year, I guess myxo isnt overly common, which means your in a low risk area. Therefore to be done yearly  X

I have mine done every 6 months, but we live in a rural farming area, so there is quite a high risk here. I think a year's fine if you're low risk. Your vet should advise you.

i say every 6 months, its worth it in the long run. regardless of what some vets say its better to be safe than sorry :D

6 monthly in a low risk area is not necessary In my unqualified opinion and is maybe an over-exertion on Buns immune system. A good immune response is needed for any vaccination to be effective.
Just as important as vaccination is vector control ie flea treatment of ALL your domestic pets and discouraging visits from local moggies. Fly netting over the hutch/run in Summer too
Giving the Vaccine in May each year will give maximum protection during the high risk months.

Mine get theirs once a year at the end of April. The vet said this is all they need, this is a low risk area but he did say if ther was an outbreak here he would send for people to go back and have it done in 6 months

Id class myself as a low risk area, but one of my rabbits still caught myxi so mine are done every 6 months

I have mine done yearly. Mine are due later this month so i may have them done again in May so it's more effective over the summer months.

Yep - I have mine done 6 monthly as there is loads of myxi round here. My vet suggests that if it's a low risk area and done annually, it should be done around May, as it's generally thought that the vaccine lasts around 8 months, so this will cover the peak summer and early spring biting insects.
