  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

As an aside to my earlier thread - one thing which I found a godsend with my snuffly rabbit, was an 'infants nasal aspirator' - it worked a treat on that aspect of Blossom's problems, despite ultimately loosing her.

Anyone else tried it?

No but my vet suggested running a sink full of very hot water and adding olbas oil then holding the bunny above it to help clear their tubes - I guess like those steam cup things my dad used to use with menthol crystals when he had bad sinusitus.

Don't know about Zeus but it certainly helped clear my tubes  as i stood there with my hair going frizzy looking daft  !

The nasal aspirator is actually a device rather than medication.

Obviously rabbits cannot blow their noses! So, this device enables you to remove the stuff from the nose via a tube (placed at the entrance to the nose), then you suck gentlely - the mucus is drawn out and trapped into an anti-bactierial chamber. It is fantastic and is particularly useful at the stage the nose becomes visably very runny.

Is this the same as a sterile lukens trap used for obtaining a sputum specimen for microscopy and culture?

These devices (for want of a better word) are available in Tesco, amongst other places prob.

I spotted it when a mother bought one through my checkout. She told me how fantastic they are. It struck me later, that if it can clear a babies nose, then it will prob. work on my rabbit!

They are readily available on the baby aisles. (not sure if they resemble your device?).
