  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Possible causes of a weepy eye- advice freeads bunn

Am picking up a freeads bunn tomorrow...but the lady has just told me he has weepy eye/eyes- just noticed it apparently

What could be the cause other than molar problems please?

Am I stupid taking it from her with the potential of vets bills??
Have been wondering if I should insist she takes it to her vet first :?

ps. he's an indoor rabbit, aged one, long haired, not vaccinated but seems well cared for- just getting rid because of baby's 'allergies'.

Teeth issues, conjuctivitus (eye infection), ulcer (unlikely if both effected), allergy/dusty/solied bedding.

The first could be expensive/on going the second should just need ab's. If you visit first check the front teeth for over growth and feel the underside of the jaw for lumps. If both check out okay it's less likely to be teeth issues tho can't rule out without vet check.

It could be something like a blocked tear duct or an eye infection - antibiotic eye drops for a few days will hopefully sort it out. You can never tell until you've got them and treated them though, I'd have thought if you insist she takes it to a vet, she'll more than likely just give it to someone else. Sadly I think vets bills are just an occupational hazard when you rescue a rabbit!

Agreed there  Of the three rabbits and one guinea pig I have got from freeads/horrible situations all have cost me quite a bit!

Thanks both of you...am unsure what to do now, as I could really do without any additional expense at the moment but dont want to leave him to go to just anyone, although he may get a good home anyway :? .

Might do what you said Tam and have a look before I take him (boyfriend was picking him up.)

thank you

Well I'm not getting this bunn tonight now, bf had forgotten he was going round a friends house so we may get him at the weekend or after, but have advised her to list him on RR and take him to the vets in the meantime.
