  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mama Doe
My neighbour has just come to me as she knows i have buns. She is going to a friends house to feed thier bunny while their away and she went just 40 mins ago and thinks something is wrong,i have been with her and the doe looks very scared/.? distressed? it growls if you go near it and has made a huge what i think must be a nest in its bed bit,it is covered with fur and if you go near it she pounces on your hand growling.now the problem is that the people are in cornwall on holiday and she couldnt get hold of them, what do we need to do if anythng??

From what I remember from previous topics - ad lib food, plenty of fresh hay and water and just keep an eye on her to make sure she is doing well. You may need to check the nest for dead kits but if she doesn't "know" you or your friend your scent may be upsetting in the nest.

I assume she has been near a male bun as it could just be a phantom - if it is the nest will be destroyed after a couple of days and no kits will be evident.

I will leave it to more knowledgeable peeps now!

Your scent shouldn't be on the babies at all... it's very important that if she does have kits that when checking the litter you must handle mum bun first and rub hands in her toilet area to get her scent all over you.

Not necessarily - I know that some of the young breeders on here have no problem handling the newborns and don't worry about scent etc because the doe knows them, it has been proved with wild birds that they can't actually tell if a human has disturbed the nest/handled the babies but rabbits are more sensitive to smell so better safe than sorry as you are strange to the doe.
