  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

is baby shampoo ok for washing rabbits and guinea pigs in? dudly has got really greasey fur and really needs a bath and i jusy thought to save a bit of money and use baby shampoo as iv already got some.

That's what I use if my buns need a clean and I have used baby shampoo on piggies too without a reaction.

Buns and guinea pigs should not really be bathed very often but if it's absolutely neessary then baby shampoo is fine.

i dont bath them very often but dudly (guinea pig) has got really greasey fur. im not sure if its got anything to do with that gland on the piggies bum.

My piggies I had (9yrs ago) used to have a shower every couple of months because my mum said they smelled. (I didn't think they did :? ). I used to use baby shampoo and I blow dried them and they were fine. :D

If it is the grease gland, I always use some swarfega on it before bathing the piggy properly, breaks down the grease lovely, otherwise use a bit of washing up liquid - not quite as good but will do the job.

yeah i think its his grease gland. he seems to have a very large one and iv never seen a piggie with such greasey fur.
