  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Checking ears!

I was looking at Alberts ears this morning and I noticed that he's got a tiny cut - he's obviously scratched it. I started having a proper look and luckily I couldn't see anything ominous however I realised that I don't really know what to look for!! Can anyone give me a checking ears checklist??!!!

I only really check them if I notice them scratching, I've never seen them in a rabbit but my cat had earmites once. If you look inside and see muck go to the vets for a checkup

I was gonna post a similar question, was stroking Jasper's ears today and I noticed on the inside of one of them theres like broken skin - I tried to take some pictures but my camera won't focus that close.

The only way I can describe it, is like when you have a small spot and they burst. It does't seem to hurt as he just sat there, he also had a heath check up on Monday and the vet never noticed.

I will keep a close eye on his ear, unless anyone can give any advice?

Is he scratching his ears or shaking his head? It could just be broken skin. You can get an antibiotic treatment from the vet that should make it go away. If he is scratching and shaking his ears then I would see the vet.

The way I check my bun's ears is to hold them on my lap, facing away, and get a small torch (maglite), warm it in my hand then shine down the ear cannal. If there is a lot of wax then I will treat it with rabbit-friendly ear cleaner to float the wax out. b-m
