  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Feeling really guilty ......

:( Every time I look at Pippa I feel so guilty that she's going for an uneccessary operation tomorrow. Does everyone feel like this before a spay or is it just me?

Awwwww but a spay will protect her from Uterine Cancer.
The risks of a spay are MINIMAL compared to the almost inevitable UC for a Doe left entire.
Pippa may feel grimbo for 24 hours but will soon be back on form.
Dont expect too much of her when she gets home. She will mostly want to sleep. As long as she poos/wees and has a nibble at some food within 24 hours of the op' you need not worry. Ask your Vet what TIME the GA was given so you can monitor her recovery.
My Vet routinely gives a gut motility med (metoclopromide) after a spay and some pain relief (metacam). I'd ask your Vet if he/she can do the same.

Thanks Jane, keep looking at her cute little face and thinking if only you knew what was coming...... I know it's for the best though, and I really want to get her a boyfriend and she's so territorial it would be impossible without spaying, so as well as the cancer issue I know it needs doing, but I still feel guilty! I'm going to take my mind off it by laying the lino in the shed for her so when she's recovered she's got an outdoor playing area.

Thinking of you and Pippa! I know exactly how you feel, I have just dropped George of at the vet to be neutered and I feel awful
I shall wait anxiously to hear news of how she gets on.

Don't feel guilty look at it as prolonger her life. The pain she will have after the spay is nothing compared to the pain and suffering she would have if she got the Uterine Cancer. She will be fine Poppy and Hiedi my Giants were up and about in no time and you wouldn't have thought they had had a big op.
Good luck and snuggles to Pippa
