hi every one.i have just come home from the vets we use seething.i took 3 of my 4 buns in for their myxi vacs and mentioned to the vet(the only 1 there that we dont like, cause he is one of the partners and is all about money, money, money!) that dudleys ears looked a bit dry and flakey on the outside.he suggested we treat them all for ear mites, which i understand its better to prevent them spreading, but instead of using ivomec as normal he sent me out with a new treatment caled xeno.i have not used this before and naively trundled out with 4 packets.i got to the till and was told that i owed nearly £200.(approx £70 of that was myxi jabs)anyway i had to tell the receptionist infront of a room full of people that i couldnt afford it.ivomec is a few pounds a jab compared to this which is £30 a box!anyway i have resorted back to ivomec.i was just so annoyed because i havent got that kind of money at the minute.dont get me wrong,i would bend over backwards for my bunnies but i cannot justify paying that kind of money when another treatment costs 10 times less and works!i know i should have asked how much it was but i feel as a responsible vet that he should have given me the option or at least a quote!!!! also i need to get my little girl speyed, last time dudley had his bits off  it cost me approx£110 with the pain relief etc,is this the going rate or am i being robbed?after tonight i feel like changing vets but i am used to the one i go to and its an animal hospital aswell.what do you guys think,am i being silly? :?
thanks.

Hi Mimi
No, you are not being silly, every penny counts when you have a few animals to look after. I had my two males rabbits nuterted a few months ago and it coat me £56 each. My vets is also a animal hospital.
Good luck

£110 is a bit expensive for a castration, that's top end spay price. It varies bit I guess average is between £35-70. The vet should definately explain the cost & difference if there are two different treatments for a condition.

 I think that's terrible. That seems really expensive, and I agree - Ivermec works, so stick to what you know. I paid £43 for Bobby's neuter, about £50 for a spay.
If you're happy with the treatment stick with them, but it might be worth ringing around a few other vets for quotes, having a chat. The vet I use are supercheap (they're also only 5 minutes away) and I was a little suspicious  but they are really good.

thankyou guys.i just left the vets feeling really angry because he was just trying to corner me into spending a fortune!of course my bunnies are worth it a hundred times over if it was necessary because i love them soooo much.

Are you being ripped off?

If it is any help, I paid £45 total for Lappers' castration.

My vet has also given me the new Xeno treatment, but it cost far, far less than that (I had about 3 tubes for Lappers and 2 guinea-pigs - I think it was about £14.00 - and very effective it was too!)

On the other hand, it cost £155 for guinea-pig spey (for cystic ovaries), so it's hard to tell (that included an ultrasound scan and an overnight stay.

Best wishes from Sue

yikes! it cost me £90 when Enya was spayed last thursday...this including the fact that she reacted badly to the anesthetic and was required to stay over night and the metacam that she was given to continue at home

ps. ive used the xenex treatment for fleas mine was about £16 for a pack 6 treatments.

Yikes  i have the same issue at my vets though. They dont discuss prices or anything. When bilbo had to have her tear duct flushed it cost £25 then they slapped a consulting charge of £15 on top

going slightly off the subject here but how much do you lot pay in consulting fees?My vets charge £15 if i see the nice lady and £12 if i see the 'im not so sure' person.(if that makes any sense) im like yikes!i spend that kind of money to be in the room for 5..maybe 10 minutes thats more then a £1 a minute!!

But as i said earlier i really wish vets would tell you how much its going to cost, i took my dog down the other day and faced a bill of nearly £100 for eye antibiotics and a swab, £30 of that was consuliting fees.

Hi Mimi

Dont you have one of the best rabbit vets in the country in Harrogate?

Or maybe that is the one you are talking about!

WOW that is steep for a castration! My vets are great i pay £40 fpr a castrate and £44 for a spay that includes SR And Painkillers, i pay £8.50 for a consult and my vets will always give me the cheaper treatment as long as they know it works just as well if not more efectivly than the more expensive one. I have to say though my vets are all about the animals and not the money i pay my vets monthly by Direct Debit and i ow them quite alot! I have an account so i can get treatment whenever it's needed without worrying about the cost. When Iris had her Myometra (infected Uterine horn) it cost me £80 that was for a ultrasound scan ( ihave pictures) Her GA, Exploritory surgery as they couldn't see on the scan what the problem was and then her spay, a bottle of metacam, antibiotics and the follow up appiontment to check she was recovering. Oh I love my vets!

we just had our holiday bunny spayed and it cost £32.00 with £4.00 for antibioltics in case of an infection. No other fees were charged/.

It would do no harm to look about at other vets in your area to see what they offer and how much they charge. Higher charges do not always reflect a more superior practice. There may be someone else on here who lives in your area who can suggest other vets who you may wish to consider using.

My myxi jab was £8.95 so even those seem pricey at your vets. I've booked Pippa in for spay next week and it'll be £67. They said it's the quantity/quality of drugs used that bumps up the cost of the spay.

For Salt's consultation and Baytril (for 3 weeks!) it cost £8. The vet also had a look at Pepper and trimmed his nails for me.
Squidgy's Ivomec injections were £9 (including consultation)a time and myxo jabs are around £10.

I think you're definitely being ripped off, those are outrageous charges! I'm so sorry you were left feeling like that in the waiting room, that's just awful.

Have done a search on xeno 450 - 6 pipettes for £24.00 to give you an idea. Surely he could have looked and seen whether your bun has ear mites rather than dishing out so many packets 'just in case'. And at £110 for a male neuter  I'd definitely look elsewhere. High prices doesn't necessarily mean your bun is in better hands. It can have a bearing, of course, but not to that degree.

I have no idea what surgery you use (and hope it's not this one!) but believe that Frances Harcourt-Brown is based somewhere near Harrogate, she is one of the rabbit vet gurus so if you can find her surgery, you can rest assured of the best treatment there!

On the subject of vets consultation charges, I can't help but think that vets make it up as they go along! I recently paid a fortune for Dusty's overnight stay at an emergency vets service (£209!), then took her to my normal vets the next day, and paid nothing for the consultation! I think the vet just felt sorry for me!! :)

Agree on that as well!! If I see my usual vet, I don't get charged consultation fees any more, just for the actual treatment. But I saw one of the other vets the other day and got charged about £8 the "minimum consultation" fee, and yet again recently was charged the full £19 or so fee with Heather and her stasis. It definitely does depend on who you see!

I'll let you know how much Heather's dental costs tomorrow Sarah!

Hope it doesn't break the bank, Alison!! :)

By the way, have you come across the South Beech vets in Wickford? I've switched to taking my guinea pigs there, as they specialise in small animals. They are fantastic with them, but I don't know what they are like with rabbits. It's a bit of a trek for me (ironically I used to live in Wickford but didn't even know it was there at the time! )

They are pretty expensive though - have got a nebuliser from them for a guinea pig at the moment - if I'd gone to another vet I'd have just got a bottle of antibiotics!

well i rang around the vets today getting quotes.the prices are similar for consultation-around the £20 mark give or take and i have registered with another vets called vets 4 pets to continue the ivomec.i will suss it out then and see if i feel confident enough in them to have lola speyed with them(if not i will try francis at harcourt-browns)they are considerably cheaper than the ones i use now,the consultation is a pound more here but the vaccs are at least £4.50 cheaper and the spey is half the price!i just feel guilty incase im compromising their care, but like a few of you said paying more doesnt necessarily mean im getting the best.i am just determined not to give that smarmy man anymore of our hard earned money for him to swan around in his sports cars!!!
anyway thanks again for all the advice.you have all been fab-as usual! :Dxx

Does anyone know of any reasonable vets in Surrey area?Sort of Weybridge/Chertsey/Addlestone/Ottershaw area?I really have issues with finances as im a student and have to pay all my vet fees myself :(
