High liver enzyme

Has anyone had any experience with high liver enzymes. I am out of my depth with what is happening to Maisie and not a lot of confidence in the vets I have been dealing with in Oxford.

Maisie had a spell of urinary incontinence and was given Baytril a couple of weeks ago, but no urine test. Half way through the course, she dried up for two days, but then started to have a wet rear and leg again. The vet I went to said she was unsure what it was and wanted to speak to a rabbit specialist and this she did who advised starting Panacur and she also took a long overdue blood test.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, for a variety of reasons I did not start the Panacur on Friday and the results of the blood tests have come back as a low white blood and a high liver test (should have been 80 and is 140). Maisie has been dry for three days and is eating and drinking fine and has not other symptoms. The vet said she thought she could have coccidiosis and wanted to treat for this, but as Maisie was okay to leave it for a couple of days. However, having read up on coccidiosis, I am now frantic and wonder should she be on something asap as it looks a nasty disease. She is a house rabbit.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

The high Liver Enzyme is due to treatment with Baytril (Told this by my Vet)
It happened to lots of my Buns who were on Baytril prior to a blood test
It should return to normal in a couple of weeks

Sorry to hear about Maisie Lorraine , can`t offer any advise on this but keeping everything crossed for her. I know how worried we become when their not very well.

Bracken has had a problem with being wet, but he`s ok now.

I wrote to my vet yesterday because I was too wimpy to speak to her and said that as she has now thrown a second diagnosis of coccidiosis into the mix along with the first of EC, , I would like Maisie to have a further urgent blood test to see if she is EC active and one for coccidiosis and also a urine test . I was advised by a good friend who runs a rescue to ask for this. She has agreed to do the tests.
Unfortunately Maisie was dry for three days but this morning she is wet again. I feel better now that I have requested the tests. I spent yesterday feeling powerless and tearful everytime I looked at Maisie.

She will need a series of blood tests to show ACTIVE EC.The test for Coccidiosis is usually from a faecal sample I think :? One blood test showing a positive Titre for EC just shows exposure to the parasite. A check has to be made to see if the Titre rises over a period of weeks which would indicate active infection. If actual clinical symptoms are present and a positive titre is obtained my Vet ASSUMES an active infection.
Personally I would start the Panacur anyway as if it is EC the longer the parasite remains in the system the more irreversible damage is done. Yes Panacur treatment has risks but my UNQUALIFIED personal opinion is that those risks are not as great as the risks of delaying treatment for suspected EC.
Hope your Vet gets to the bottom of Maisies problems

God Jane, I am going to need some of your meds soon. I have started the Panacur this morning for Maisie as it was going to take a while to get any test results back and there is such a risk in doing nothing. I spoke with the vet this morning. As Maisie has a very low white blood count, there is a risk with the Panacur, but we are going to do a repeat count on Monday to see how she is coping with the Panacur.

I mentioned to her Jane, could the raised liver test be because of the Baytril and she said no. But hopefully it is. I am trying to get a poo sample from Maisie at present. Got one last night, but I am not sure how long poo lasts. She has had pellets, grass, beans and all she wants to do is sleep bless her. ps. got the poo sample

I spoke to the vet about Daisy and TJ who are my other house rabbits. Daisy seems a bit subdued this morning and did not want to go out in the garden which is unusual. Should I start them on the Panacur without a definitive diagnosis of EC - Maisies only symptom was incontinence. I never should have read that article about low blood count risk of Panacur. The vet said I could bring in the other two rabbits for blood tests so that we could know where they stand with their white cell count etc. prior to starting the Panacur and then test them half way through the treatment to monitor their level.

She is also going to put Maisie back on Baytril as her white cell is so low in case she picks anything up.

Thanks for your advice everyone. I am like a pendulum, I think one course of action and then I vere off onto another one. I hate it not being able to do anything.

Yet another UNQUALIFIED comment.White blood cell count varies throughout the day. Its at its lowest in the late afternoon/evening. So the TIME the blood test was taken will be significant.
Stress (strange environment/longstanding illness/transport/handling)all LOWER the white blood cell count.
I assume your Vet took these factors into account :?
