  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Pet Insurance...

Does any one have it?! If so, who have you got your quote with? I'm considering insuring Winston but dont want to jump into it. Any suggestions?! Thanks, Fiona. :D

My insurance is with pet plan. they are very good as they have a whole of life policy which means that if your rabbit gets ill with something and then has the same illness later on in life, it is still covered. alot of the insurance places will name that as not being covered once you have claimed once for it... hope that makes some sort of sense!!

I'd been wondering about this, and just had a look on petplan's site, and see they do vets fee cover upto £2000, I know when they have surgery it does start to get expensive, but I wondered how worthwhile it is? And also wondered how quickly everything mounts up? And is £2000 a likely figure for a claim to go to?

I was pleasantly suprised when Alfred's teeth trim plus anti biotics came to £11. For comparison it was £140 to get both the horses teeth done.

I do have my horses insured, but only Apache is covered for vets fee's - his policy alone is £65 per month, but I know a colic case can easily get to £3000, I've also added a voluntery excess for vets fee's of £250 to keep the costs down. I don't have Misty covered for vet's fees as due to her age no company will insure her for them.

Insurance is definitely worth it in my opinion. Benny's treatment in one year totalled around £1500 including an £800 operation to remove an abscess. We would have been broke without insurance.

Sorry for the cliche but you just never know what's around the corner!

Thanks very much for all your replies.

I think I'm definately going to get insurance, better to be safe than sorry!!

Fiona.
