Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

False pregnancy or stress of the heat???

Frankie

Young Bun
I came home form work yesterday to find that hotpot (Flemish) had pulled a lot of her fur out
She is nearly 8 months and i shall be getting her spayed next month so could it have been a false pregnancy (defiantly not real as she has never had contact with an un-neutered male or could it be she’s had a HUGE moult due to the heat? it seems to have come from her back and sides more that her tummy and she seems a lot more slim line! is this normal or is there an underlying problem? Please help as I can’t find this in any books I have.

Do you have other rabbits? If you have males and she has got their scent then she is probably having a phantom pregnancy. I havent heard of a rabbit pull out its fur because of the heat.
As you plan to have her spayed that will solve the problem

Moulting wouldn't cause chunks of hair. It probably is a phantom pregnancy, it won't do her any harm, just get her speyed asap.
