Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

black lionhead panting constantly?

I have three rabbits Honey, Rosie and Jess the black lionhead. Its been warm around here lately, but not the hottest its been for a while. Jess seems to pant all the time compared to the other two (castor rex and PEW polish). Even when its not that sunny or hot and often when shes just lying down flat out not having ran around or anything like that. She doesn't have any other symptoms of being ill and is very bright, drinks like a fish and eats like a horse.

Is her panting normal because shes a black rabbit (which would absorb heat from the sun better than my white bunny) and because she has longer hair than my other two rabbits?

She does get bullied by Honey and Rosie and has always been quite skittish around them but not hugely skittish, I just mean not as relaxed as my other two who I've had longer!

Hi Neesh

When you say 'panting' do you mean she breathes fast or breathes with her mouth OPEN. The latter is a SERIOUS issue.
If she breathes fast that can be an indication of stress or pain aswell as a response to being too hot.
I would ask your Vet to check your panting Bunny over.

Oh no her mouth isn't open, she'd be at the vets straight away if that was so! She just pants all the time as though she is hot, its just different to my other rabbits thats all.

I think I'll end up taking her anyway as I'm taking Honey along some time soon :)

Could just be the way she is. My Smoke Angora (black face) does this even when it's not particularily warm. I spray her with a water mister thing and give her frozen bottles to lie against.
