what to treat/protect hutch with?

we are building a new hutch for our expanding family and was wondering what those of you who made your own use to treat and preserve the wood?
 
I use bitumen paint, but make sure it's dry and that the hutch is aired out before it's used. Get it from Wilko it's cheapest.
