  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My rabbit has got a couple of small scaly patches on the inside of his ears, on the outside was a scaly patch then a small chunk of fur fell off. I've check his fur and can't see any insects or fleas. He also has small dry bits on the very ends of his ears on the outside of his ears. I've been reading the book I have and the only thing I can see is mites. Could it be mites? I'm Going to book him a vets apointment asap (not open on sunday).

Yes it MIGHT (SORRY!!) be!!
Is he scratching his ears a lot? If your Vet thinks he has mites a course of Ivomectin injections will sort it out.

He doesn't seem to be scratching anymore than usual. However when he cleans his ears he nibbles the ends.

I'd take him along to your Vet so as he/she can check him over.

Will book him an appointment tomorrow. Is there anything i can do for him in the meantime?

Checked down his ears and could not see anything else.

Can't give you any advice, but just wanted to say that Squidgy is currently being treated for ear mites and its been no trouble at all. Just a course of injections. He's had one and isn't shaking his head or itching as much.
Hope you get it sorted.

Just come back from the vets and he thinks it is mites, not sure which type he said as i was trying to stop Max jumping off the table. He had an injection and has to go back for 2 more. He looks so miserable now, the car journey hasn't helped, he's just sitting there. Loads of cuddles needed tonight me thinks.
