Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Getting a bit worried

Can anyone reassure me please. We getting our new buns in a couple of weeks, a mini rex mum and baby daughter and I'm starting to worry that it's going to be hard having a mum and baby. Are I worrying needlessly? The baby is ickle and I'm worried that the big hutch and run we're getting with the big ramp is going to be too much for her and she'll fall off and get hurt.

Also I'm worried that the mum will be protective of her baby and won't let us near.

I've had babies and I've had adults but never together.

We're so excited but as usual I'm worrying about something!! :(

Thanks

How old will the baby be?

As long as the baby is not so young that she is wobbly on her feet the ramp shouldn't be a problem. Younger animals tend to get the hang of them faster than older ones. The bigger the hutch and run are the better. Young rabbits need lots of space for their mad antics 8)

Mother daughter pairs usually are very good as they are prebonded.
Rabbits are not very good at mothering (they only need to feed them once a day for 5 minutes 8) ) so I doubt she would be possesive of her. If she is territorial for other reasons spaying her might well sort that out. It would also help stop them squabbling when the baby becomes a teenager, one set of hormones being more than enough

She'll be 8-9 weeks when we get them. Thanks, that's reassured me.

We have been offered two babies and mum now, so might be having all three! :)
