Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ears

Hi I have just noticed on Harveys ears today that they look a bit dry a bit like dandruff but not realy bad! Theres a few flakes of what looks like dry skin aswell. I was just wondering what this could be? Is it the start of something serious? :?

Well i cant see anything like that, its just on the outside of his ears not in! It just looks like sry skin to me, but may be something else im not sure!

'Dandruff' on bunnies is usually a sign that the bunny has got mites - although the mites are so small that you probably won't be able to see them. I'd take him up the vet, as if it is mites, he will need some treatment to get rid of them.

Its just on top of his ears, not inside. There isnt any flaky bits loose on his fur just looks like dry skin on his skin, if i gently scratch at that then it flakes up if you get what i mean!? :? A bit hard to try to describe!

rabbits can get mites anywhere I think. I know that mites cause flakey skin, they can also cause hair loss. Its easily treated and in my experiance vets don't charge much to check for them. Our bunny had a skin scrape done which cost about $20 but I don't know if thats always neccessary.

Ofcourse vets and countries vary a lot.
