You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Cataracts

Morning

I took my two year old bun Manny to the vet’s on Friday, and she has diagnosed him with cataracts. I took him along because his right eye siuddenly went cloudy - the whole pupil went from normal to unmissably cloudy in the space of a week or two. The vet said he is probably nearly blind in that eye and that he will probably loose his sight in his other eye too. She said there’s nothing that can be done but that he will probably manage fine.

Poor Manny - he seems absolutley fine and is showing no signs of not being able to see - but he’s just a baby :( .

Has anyone else had a young rabbit with cataracts? Is it normal for them to appear so suddenly? Is it worth getting a second opinion?

I’ve had a bad year with my bunnies so far - we lost Miffy in January, our OAB Hope has had all sorts of problems in the past few months - I never thought I’d be worrying about Manny too  .

Hiya.
As Manny is still so young I would advise asking your Vet to treat him with a course of Panacur. The EC parasite can be passed from the Doe to her kits during birth and the spores from the parasite can cause rupture of the lens in the eye and subsequent cataracts. Although the Panacur wont cure the Cataract it will eliminate the parasite (if it is EC) thus preventing further damage (to the central nervous system, kidneys etc)
Manny should cope perfectly well with the cataract.
Another possible cause is a congenital cataract.
If he were mine I'd want him treated with Panacur as a precaution anyway

Thanks Jane
I'll ask the vet about Panacur - although she did mention that it was probably congenital. Could Manny have lived with EC for two years will no ill effects?
I saw your new bunny on the other thread and he's beeeaaauuutiful :D !

I THINK the damage from EC happens when the parasite sheds spores.
So I guess this could happen at any time once the Bun is infected. From what I understand the cataract causes no problems for the Bun. You can get a blood test to see if Manny is EC positive. This does NOT show active infection just exposure to it. I would just opt for the course of Panacur, even if it is prophylactic.
Oh, and Lord Lopsley is a stunner isnt he!! :D :D

Hi,

Although my bunny is 8 years old she now has a cataract in both eyes and
she manages fine. The vet said it could run in the family but as she is quite old it could just be a matter of age.

Don't worry too much she still leads a full active life u would hardy notice that she was blind in both eyes. She does stick closer to her partner Squeak though and seems to use her wiskers more to feel her way a round. She is a very happy bunny :D :D
