  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

VETS!!!!

OK I have started to phone around my local vets to see a) what age they casterate male rabbits at and b) cost.

I have phoned 5 vets and am confused now.

1) Costs £51.02, Rabbit has to be 3 months old
2) Costs £63.14, Rabbit has to be 4 months old
3) Costs £48.00, Rabbit has to be 5 months old
4) Costs £50.00, Rabbit has to be 5 months old
5) Costs £53.93, Rabbit has to be 6 months old

How old would you all recommend? I want Chester to have a friend as soon as possible really but obviously only after he has recovered.

Thanks xx

I'd go with the first one, as long as his bits have dropped he should be fine to be castrated.

I'd ask a few questions as well, like, do they advise starving a rabbit before being operated on? (Should never starve a bunny b4 an op)

What stitches do they use?

I'm sure there are more but I can only think of questions to ask when having a girlie done

Crumbs how can you tell when his bits have dropped?

The first one actually specialises in small animals and would be my favorite place to take but it just seemed too young to me?!!

Don't want to put him at any risk but I guess they know what they are doing.

What are the best stitches to go for then?

Thanks for everyones help in everything, honestly its a minefield out there

apparently, they bounce back better if they're younger. Travis' erm "bits" were so big, I couldn't miss knowing when they'd dropped!!! It's always worth taking him along for a check up with that vets first, just to get a feel for it, they'd be able to give you a better idea of when he's ready then too :D

You will be able to see/feel when his bits have dropped
It usually happens around 3-4 months. As long as Chester weighs at least 1kg then he should be fine to have the op as soon as you see/can feel his balls!!

Well I will have had him 3 weeks tomorrow and he was 9 weeks when I saved him, so I reckon its time to see the vet then! (sobs my baby is growing up so quick! rofl  )

At least he can get a new friend sooner rather than later, though it takes about 8 weeks for the op to be effective doesn't it?

Cheers folks

Thanks Jane, I will be 'ball checking' later then! and weighting him.

I remember when I got my very first male bun. I thought he was a Doe and was really worried when I saw the skin around 'her' girlie bit going darker   Then the area started to swell
Then I noticed it was the same on both sides...... :? :?
THEN I realised 'she' was a 'he'...

Regardless of weight as soon as the testicles have dropped I get them up to the vets to be chopped off  I get the females done as soon as they are 1kg in weight but have got them done less than that before :D

This is a very funny post    Sorry havent got a helpfull coment just thought i'd let you know its made me chuckle...............Im just glad i've got a female bun

I think it's disgusting that they can charge such a huge range of prices. It's £60 here for a boy and £90 for a girl!
As soon as a vet can feel the testicles they can remove them lol!

 yeah it is really funny.

I was also shocked the difference in price. I know that the female op is obviously alot more complicated so thats obvioiusly more, but to be £12 more in some cases is pretty steep.

I shall keep you informed! lol

I go by my MEGA RABBIT SAVY Vets advice re the 1Kg rule
Hard to administer the correct GA dose for anything less. Also bun is at much greater risk of hypothermia during the op'
I always go by Christabel's(Vets) excellent advice and bunny orientated knowledge

My vet is very rabbit savy too and he doesnt have any problem working out the anaesthetic dose of rabbits under 1kg  In fact I have never had any problems with a baby bunny going under anaesthetic, I have found the earlier I get them done the quicker they recover

You can get him a friend before 8 wks if she's a neutered female because it doesn't matter then - you can't get pregnant without a womb!! (I'm sure he'd appreciate an older woman, My Leon loves being a toyboy!)

Starting to wonder whether Chester is a boy at all? he/she doesn't have any obvious lumps or bumps where they should be! Ok how do you tell whether you have a girl or a boy?

Hiya, Chester is now *counts on fingers* 13 weeks old.

I am in Hatfield, Herts but prepared to travel to a recommended vets! lol

Thanks everyone
