Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi all, we've just come in to find Willow shaky and unsteady on his feet. We've had him out and he can do a few hops normally then lists to one side or falls over :( He seems to be eating fine and generally ok in himself though a bit subdued. Do you think we need to see a vet tonight or keep an eye on him? Any advice very gratefully received.

Hiya
Willow does need to see a Vet TONIGHT.
Loss of balance might be due to a middle ear infection or some sort of CVA (cerebrovascular accident or stroke). Even though your Bun appears OK in that he is eating loss of balance is a significant symptom needing immediate veterinary attention. Another possibility is a parasitic infection called Encephalitizoon Cuniculi.
Please keep us posted as to how he is doing.

The vet suspects either a stroke or a middle ear infection though says we've caught it early. He's checked heart and temperature, both of which are fine and has given Willow an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory, and we're taking him back tomorrow. Please keep your fingers crossed for us!

Hi all,

Willow seems much better after the treatment last night. Been to the vets again today to have another antibiotic injection and a check over - the vet says he's made excellent progress, and was surprised by how much he'd improved. He's now hopping around with much more confidence and generally seems much happier in himself. We're going back for one final injection tomorrow and that should hopefully be all he needs. :D

Yep he's definitely on the mend and much more like his usual happy self :D We're very relieved! Thanks to everyone for the advice and support, he's now on a course of Baytril (that'll be fun, the tablets are huuuge!) but is expected to make a full recovery :D
