  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Well one of my male dwarf rabbits Muffin, is having severe stomach pain. It started about 2weeks ago with his loss in appetite and pudding like stools. Well I took him to the vet Saturday and he gave him some paste looking stuff and a injection of Batril, yesturday I tryed letting him out to play in the grass (it was a tad warm) and he layed there not moving to looking around at all the stuff that was going on, then I crawled down there and he wasn't moving at all. So I was freaked out and ran him back inside, my mom thought he might be to hot, so I sat in front of the air conditioner. And he seemed to be okay, so I brought him back upstairs to his home.

Also the vet gave us some laxitone to give him over a 3 day period so lastnight was his 2nd dose. And since friday, he isn't moving around in his cage, and looks down and depressed. Same thing today, we have a vet appointment for him in 2 hours  But he looks so bad today, we wouln't get up at all except to reposition his hurting tummy.

And this is scaring the **** out of me now, because hes not using his hind legs at all, he looks like a inch worm, inching around his cage   Im so afraid that its going to be somthing terrible, like a blockage where he'll have to have surgery.(many buns dont make it back from surgery) Im so scared im going to have to make a very hard decision to end his life, or somthing :( Im so afraid right now O_O I need some help/comfort of some kind, what should I do??

Im so afraid for his life right now, im shaking.

Oh Dear I am so sorry your Bunny is very poorly :(
Your Vet will, I am sure, make every effort to help your Bun.
It is difficult to suggest what may be wrong without being able to actually see the very poorly rabbit but from what you describe the situation does sound serious.
You will do whatever is necessary in the best interests of your rabbit because you love and care for him very much.
Please let us know what your Vet says.

I'm not convinced your vet is treating this right - is he a rabbit specialist or more a cat/dog vet? Normally when a rabbit has a blockage, you wouldn't have surgery for it, because it rarely succeeds, if ever - rabbits are very prone to abdominal adhesions and rupture unfortunately :(

my first rabbit died of a blockage last year - it happened within 24 hours from being fine to being dead, so I doubt your rabbit has a blockage or he wouldn't have lasted 2 weeks. I took my rabbit to the vet and she treated him for stasis, rather than for a blockage, which killed him - so I tend to favour home remedies now unless surgery or antibiotics are needed.

However, what he should have is painkillers - it doesn't sound like your vet has given any? If a rabbit is in pain they won't eat, they give up the will to live at all, and if they don't eat, their stomach stops working and they fill up with gas. Has he eaten anything?

If he's been in pain for 2 weeks, have you made any changes to his diet at all? What does he eat most days? If you can give some details that would help.

My rabbit, Maa, has been like this a couple of times recently, due to hairball - her poops were squidgy, or just liquid running out of her - she looked very unhappy. I cut her pellets down to just a few (so she didn't feel forgotten when I fed the other rabbits) - really I would ideally have cut out pellets altogether - And I cut her veg out as well - just gave her a tiny square when I fed the others (boy was she angry with me!) This made her eat hay - there was nothing else to eat! I gave her lots of fresh hay a few times a day, and that's what she ate.

I also gave her some probiotic - I wonder if your vet did this with the paste you mention? Basically good bacteria to balance the overgrowth of bad bacteria in the stomach. You can buy probiotic powder from your vet.

I gave her half a rennie rapize indigestion tablet - she gobbled it up (raspberry flavour) to counter the wind in her stomach - can you get these in the US? I also gave her a bromelain tablet, which is the pineapple enzyme that helps with hairball - this is from health shops in the UK, so I guess you can buy it in the US too - if not then give him some FRESH (not tinned) pineapple chunks - just a few - the enzyme allows water to soak into a blockage, keeping it moving through the gut - laxatone stops water soaking into the mass, as it coats it with oil, but it may help it slide through too.

And finally I gave her half a soluble asprin in quarter pint of water, in her drinking bottle, with the probiotic powder. She was fine after a day of this - When it happened again the following week I did the same treatment and again she was fine after a day. It's all because she's moulting and eating so much hair. :(

All baytril is likely to do is further kill off the good bacteria in the stomach, which will make the problem worse in my opinion. Hope he's going to be OK - tummy problems are very common in bunnies unfortunately :(

yes, Ive been reserching all day, and Im going to have my vet give him some painkillers, if he doesn't then Im probably going to have to find another vet. Muff just got through moulting before this happend, I tryed to keep the fur off him as best I could. The vet is suppost to see mostly exotic pets. Last week I tryed giving him some canned pinnapple juice, is that bad to give him canned pinnapple juice? o_O or should I get some fresh. Either way he only drank it once.

Well I hope/pray its not a blockage, I hope it can be treated. Well pray for miffkins guys, Im gonna load him up for the vets in about 30min :|

Sending healing vibes to Muffin.
If your Bun has been poorly for 2 weeks then I doubt it is a GI obstruction. If it were, your Bun would not survive for 2 weeks.
Hope you get some positive news.
