We're considering a couple of new sections and would like your thoughts :) These are just ideas we're throwing around at the moment so they won't definately happen.

Firstly, a 'adult general chat forum', not in a x-rated sort of way but somewhere that's a little more laid back about what you can post as you don't have to consider younger members. Obviously there would need to be some rules to protect members from abuse and also consider where the lines are drawn regarding material posted in that section of the forum. We'd love to hear your thought's on the idea and if you like it what 'rules' should be.

Secondly, we were thinking about an under 16/18 forum where younger people can discuss things, perhaps issues that other young people understand better like fitting bunnies in around parents rules and perhaps where asking questions isn't soo daunting.

Both forum would be opt-in, you'd have to specifically click to say, I want to view the forum to see it so if you weren't interested you would see it.

The current general chat section would stay as it is.

So what are your thoughts? Good idea, terrible idea? Got a better idea?

I vote neither :? I personally think that there aren't enough young adult members in this forum that would be interested.
Also, I feel that I've come to this forum to talk to people of a higher level of knowledge of me, and talking to people my age that are in the same situation doesn't really interest me.
For the few young adult members there are, I think it is fine the way it is where there are the occasional "young adult" threads that pop up.

I know what this idea has come to place. There have been some complaints by members whose children veiw this forum, and they have found some things not appropriate. And I do understand your concern. I just think that this wouldn't really solve your problem :?

I just thought I should voice my opinion being one of the few, young adult members of this forum :D

I'm 14 and I think it would be sort of age racist to seperate us in any way. What I think would be better is if there was a section called "kiddies" and it would also be like a reference section but with everything simplified soo its easier to understand and also have everything they would want to know about or would need to know there. Parents can tell their kids to only go on that part of the forum. Its still sort of seperating but only to control content better, not to let people get away with more stuff and not have to watch what they say.

They can ask questions and when everyone is answering they will know that they should not use huge words etc. I don't mean to dumb it down for them but to like not complicate the answers.

An adult forum would be awful because there is no reall way to stop "young adults" going there but if adults go to a kiddies forum it doesn't matter.

I think you have some good ideas, is good that you are trying to fix the problems we are having.

Also doesn't it say when you join that if you are not over 13 blah blah blah can't remember

I think an Adult section would soon turn into an x rated section!...And again if parents leave their children browsing the site there would be nothing to stop the youngsters going to that section....children can find out hidden passwords quicker than my Rufus eats his greens!
I'm guessing this is in response to the recent topics that have resulted in complaints?....my personal opinion, I didn't read the "foot fetish "one so can't comment....but the photo of the tribal dress I did view and comment on...and nothing there that would or should have offended anyone.
Much worse pictures in any newspaper on on the TV news. If a child is too young to see that picture or read the comments then it would have been too young to understand the comments made anyway.
A lot of parents leave their children on the pc with a general security guide inplace..well sorry to say this is not enough...Kids born and bought up with pcs can find their way round and through things without anyone knowing.
The internet is a wonderful fountain of information BUT is also contains all the worse failings of the human mind........ if your children are too young to view a picture of men in native dress almost showing there private parts..then NEVER leave them on the pc alone.

If these changes happen the "General "chat section would become uneccessary..and we'd end up with a junior chat and an x rated chat!!
Why not have a seperate junior forum with a link from RR..then parents can point their children in that direction and anyone who feels they want to give advice on rabbit care can go there. Parents would still have to be on their guard as to who their children were chatting to but would mean this forum can stay as it is.. :D
This is a very well run and popular forum...please don't change it!

I agree with everything Jill has said - I think all the age groups that use this forum intergrate very well - I have been surprised on a few occasions to discover the young age of some of the forum members, given their mature outlook :D

I voted both :D , as well as an intergrated general chat secion.

I think everyone gells well, but unfortunetly we have lost a lot of the older members, because it is quiet strict in my opinion and a lot of general chat is repeated so often as new people join. I've absoultly no problem nattering with the younger folks in fact I find it quite funny, but it's turned into such a social thing, much bigger than just the buns and everyone on here has met at one time or another, it would be nice to have sections that you could disapear into for certain problems/laughs. It would easier not to offend people too, as the general chat thingy is an umberral (sp?) for so many different things.

The younger section would also be good for people to share homework worries/ crushes that sort of thing.

There will also be more places to chat which is always a good thing :thumb: as topics on the general chat dissapear really quick. I think it wll attract more adults too, which is good for the buns as the have transport/ house and can help out with emergency bunny problems.

I think the age group on here is really young and the majority of adults on here run rescues and we don't have very many adult browsers, chatters anymore. I joined not long after it started and I can see the change, the age group has gradually got younger and younger. It would be nice to seesome of the older folks back talking regually again :D

but i've noticed a fatal flaw with the voting, that as an high percentage of regular users are young they're going to vote no

neither, i dont wantto feel as if we have been 'grouped' and put in to sections I like the forum as it is :) I think it would offend if you had 2 sections for adults and children. :? that is just my opinion though as a young member (16 in just over a week)

how old are you? would you feel the same if general chat was still there these were additional sections?

Just thought, the general ection will be the same, surely it would only add to the forum to have other sections it wont take anthing away?

Maybe, but I'd have thought that the tendency would be for adults to slowly move towards an 'adult chat' section even subconciously, and it could end up alienating people :? Could always trial it and see how it goes I suppose.

im almost 16, I think it would make us feel more seperate, I dont like the idea of being treated like a 'lil kid' if you know what I meen. I like this forum because there are mixed ages and we can all talk as one. if there were added groups I think it would put 'some' people off joining as they see it as age discrimination(sp) im sorry but that is just my view :) :?

I dont see that it will put people off joining. I personally think its a good idea to have a seperate adult section. There have been occasions when some of us adult folk want to share something funny with each other that may not be appropriate for the younger generation (oh god that makes me sound 50  ) I am sure we would all still use the other sections just as much, this way we would still be able to post what we want without things being deleted because they are regarded as inappropriate.

Yeah I do see what you mean, but a lot of the adults have practiculary up sticks and left, or just pop by from time to time. There has been a change in age group since it started and the way it's going all the adults will disapear completely. Which will mean the end or bunny runs and emergency take in rabbit help. if people are either too young to drive or live with thier parents.

I see where you are coming from, i think it would be better if the sections were 16 and over and under 16 as people parents complain mostly when the child is under 16?

or even a section where you enter under your own discretion and have to ask for a passwoed, where you may find links to not so nice peta videos or adult homour etc. I do understand why the older teens would be annoyed as at 16 you can die for your country, get married have kids, but not enter a certain section on a rabbit forum. At the same time, it can be annoying when the majority are enjoying a topic and it's removed because one person complains.

I think a better way to split it might be to have a rabbit chat section (in addition to care), and an off topic chat, and maybe allow off topic to have more adult themes?

General chat gets so muddled up with on and off topic stuff!

Hiya thank you for your comments so far :)

If we go ahead with an adult section, it will have to be made very clear where the boundaries lie, as we dont want RU to become x rated  and it will probably have to be more moderated than other sections of the forum.
RU has become a well respected forum, and the concern is that this adult section could potentially undo all we have achieved together to date.
How can we ensure this is not the case :?:
Rabbits UNITED is just that, a united forum, where all age groups can mix and share rabbit chat and other chat :)
People do come and go from the forum, but I dont necessarily agree it is not because they are unable to post adult type material.
Friends can use the PM system of the forum and private email if they wish to share those kind of things.

On other hand, an adult section could ensure the general chat section is a place where you can guarantee safe viewing for all age groups , as anything in the grey area will be in an adult section.
What guidelines do you wish to see in an adult section :?:
For example, a recent picture in general chat (not mentioning any names here of the lovely lady who posted it:lol: ) had a riske image ...is this the type of image you are anticipating the adult section can be used for :?: I am a bit worried where we are going to draw the lines.

Ideas very much appreciated please :)

Best wishes

I know the picture you mean. I think that it wasn't all that bad as you can get same sort of pictures in geography books. As it was just native dress that did have a funny side to it. I don't think it should be pornoraphic in there, but sometimes some of the extreme animal abuse cases are too much for all to stomach. It would be nice to have a place where there is a chance that some of the stuff imagies that could offend could go, but out of the way so people know they choose to read them, rather then inocently wonder across them. Hopefully that makes sense.

I can't spell
