  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Info Re Buns Who Have Had Extensive Dental Work

Jack's-Jane

Uncle Albert had his MAJOR Dental treatment about 10 days ago.
It involved cutting away lots of his gums as they had granulated over severely impacted molar spurs
Since then he has only been able to eat liquidised feed.
Our Vet is away on a conference and she telephoned me to say that she had been able to discuss Bertie's case with one of the speakers at the conference.
Apparently the muscles in a buns jaw 'adapt' to accomodate dental problems. So when these problems are removed the jaw muscles have to adapt back again. This can take up to 3 weeks!! Until the muscles have adapted to accomodate the corrective dentistry the bun will not be able to chew.
I had been so worried that Berties inability to eat solids several days after his Dental meant he was in a lot of pain. Apparently this is not necessarily the case. It is just the mechanics of the jaw that are not able to function til the muscles have adapted. This makes sense as Bertie is obviously WANTING to eat and is pestering me for food all the time   If he was in pain he would be unlikely to do this. He takes loads of liquid feed and I suspect is actually putting on weight :D
Sorry this is a bit of a long winded post but I thought I'd pass on the info our Vet gave me :D :D

Very interesting to know! Thanks for this Jane, I know that Cara is going to have to have dental work done soon, so it will give me some idea of what to expect.
