  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cut lip

Woke up this morning to find that Humpty has a cut above his lip. It was bleeding, but has stopped. Think he had a fight with Pepper through the bars of her cage :( He seems his usual self, though. Should I be worried?

Hiya.
Has the lip actually been torn/split?
If so it might need Veterinary attention.
You need to clean the wound with cooled boiled water as bite wounds easily get infected. You also need to check that your bun continues to eat/drink as sometimes bunnies with a sore mouth wont and this can lead to gut motility problems.
If the skin is just broken and not torn I would clean it well and keep a close eye on your bunny to check the wound is healing with no sign of swelling once the wound has scabbed over.
Double-layer of wire on the cage-front methinks!!

It's above the lip - not on the actual edge. It seems to be just a bad scratch rather than a tear or deeper injury. I have done my best to clean with cooled bolied water, although he didn't want me to touch it. He has been eating and drinking since, so will just keep an eye on it and keep the two bunnies further appart!
