  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I need advice...I'm really worried!

Young Bun
Hi,

My bunny, Atlantis. Well, a couple of minutes ago i was laying on the floor talking to her while she was in her cage watching me. then i noticed one of her eyes was red (where the tear duct would be) but the other was a normal white eye ball.

What shall I do? Is it serious?

I'm very worried.

I wonder if she could have got a piece of straw poked in her eye? Is it bothering her or is she fine otherwise?

For now you could try bathing it in salt water and then see how it is in the morning. If it still looks sore a trip to the vet for some eye drops would be in order.

PLEASE DO NOT BATH HER EYE IN SALT WATER!!!!!!

this will only iritate the eye and make the inflamation worse. gently bath around the eye to remove any discharge and apply Fucithalmic twice a day.

salt in water granulates, i can guarentee you it is bad for the eye. small granules can scratch the surface and general drying can occur. its not really salt in tears, its more like electrolytes.
i saw a dog once that had had its eye bathed by the owner with salt water for almost a month rather than seek medical treatment, needless to say the dogs eye was a mess and it lost it eventually. maybe not because of the salt but it had aggrivated the situation.

you should really take your bun to the vet, you can never be to careful with eyes.

How is her eye today Janine?
If it's still red and looks bloodshot, then I say you bring her to the vet for an eye drop just to be safe.

I took her to the vets yesterday for her first vaccine.

She's been abit of her food, and completely moved her bed to the over side of the cage. she really made alot of noise the little devil.

:) She was as good as gold....but later on she kept trying to run off the table. I think she was scared until i rubbed her nose with mine saying..."You're so brave Atlantis....you're a good girl."

I've not had her long and already I love her to pieces. I think that she's starting to trust me more. She today ignored me as I tried to talk to her and when someone came round to my flat. she was trying to catch my attension!

Earlier on i tried to have alook at her teeth. I put her on my knee and stroked her but I was too scared i'd hurt her so i put her back home. I don't think she was pleased about it, she moved away from me when I went to talk to her.

We're getting on great. :)

Awww, that's great! Within no time she'll be following you everywhere looking for cuddles and attention! Glad she's starting to trust you now! :D
