The use of homeopathic remedies & herbs for bunnies

Hello everyone :D ,

I am interested in learning about the use of homeopathic treatments and herbs in bunnies. Somebody kindly forwarded this link:

http://www.islandgems.net/herbalremedies.html

This shows a list of herbs and what they are used to treat. I am interested in trying Echinacea on my bun for its antibiotic properties and possibly smooth-leaf elm for its use for mouth and throat inflammation, but how do you know what quantity to use? Echinacea, for example, I have at home in powdered form within a capsule. Could I use the powder from the capsule and if so how much do I use?

With regards to the smooth leaf elm. How would I prepare that to give to a bunny and in what quantity?

Any help much appreciated. Also if anybody has any knowledge of plants/herbs and their uses I would be very interested. Perhaps we could make up a list between us.

Love and hugs,

Nicola and Harvey xxx

You and Harvey must have read my mind as I had intended to do a search on homeopathic remedies!! Thanks for the link :thumb: Janex

Hello :D ,

I would be interested in using the Echinacea for its antibiotic properties, but how do you know how much to use? Do you think you can use Echinacea powder as found in the capsules you can buy from chemists?

Does anybody have any experience or knowledge in the use of homeopathic/herbal remedies? I would be very interested to learn more.

Love and hugs,

Nicola and Harvey xxx

One of the vets in our practice is a homeopathy specialist. We found out this morning that our pet insurance will pay for homeopathic treatment with no excess and up to a limit of £750 for each of them.

I have a bunch of links once Rabbits Only forum gets running again. Stupid useless software support people!

If you plan on buying remedies from a company, stay away from Pet Medicine Chest. I've heard lots of bad things about them, they're being investigated in the US, and they don't tell you the ingredients on the website, you have to order it and check the label! Plus their website says awful stuff like Pasteurella is a virus!

Actually, their advice is so bad it's funny, until you realize that well-meaning people actually buy their stuff.

Things to keep in mind with herbal remedies:

They can and do interact with traditional medicines. Always consult your vet!

Sometimes you can find homeopathic vets that are well versed in herbal and non-traditional healing as well as traditional medicine.

Rabbit Health in the 21st Century has a list of herbs, their uses, and their interactions. It's quite helpful!

I have a fab little animal homeopathy book but ive just packed it last week as im moving soon! If I dig it out again I will post the author on here!
I have used various remedies on cats & dogs in the past (travel sickness being one of them!) & I just bought what I needed from Holland & Barratt or a similar store....

personaly i know of several cases where adding ground ginger to a rabbits diet has in at least one instance cured, and in almost every case improved stomach related problems, including susceptibility to bloat and diarrhea.
ginger is strongly anti bacterial (which is why it is traditional eaten with sushi) and helps aid digestion. depending on the source recomended surgested amounts vary but the average seems to be a small teaspoon to be spinkled over food once a day.
please note that crystalized ginger does not have the same effect any due to its high sugar content can adversly effect the balance of bacteria in the rabbits gut.
camomile can help reduce inflamtion either as an infusion applied to the skin or when taken oraly. it also acts as mild pain killer. i used it with some sucsess on my continental giant who suffered sore hocks.

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions!!! :D

I have been investigating on the internet and it's very interesting.

I see Echinacea can be used to boost their immune system. Can you use Echinacea from health food shops and how much do you use?

Also garlic is an antiseptic. How would you prepare this to give to the bunny?

I would be very interested to learn more about homeopathy so if anybody else has any more info on herbs and their uses please let me know.

Thank you naturestee for those links :D . I'm goin to have a browse through in a mo.

Love and hugs,

i always have ginger root in my veg rack. Its very good grated ( about a teaspoon ) in thier food, actually all my animals get grated ginger and garlic in thier food. Fleas hate garlic, but is also very good for the blood.
Ginger is very good for the digestion .
Garlic and ginger can be grown quite easily. i also add parsley , stops the smell of garlic .
But herbs dont have to be used just as food suppliments. Lavender is very good at keeping the flys away, but is toxic to a lot of animals, including rats ( which is handy as wild ones tend to stay away from it ). My bunnies adore marigolds, and also make quie a nice 'bite' to salads.

Hi Trevlove,

How much garlic should you give to bunny? I was going to puree some in Harveys vegetables for his tea.

I was chatting the other day with someone about echinacea and wether it could be used on bunnies.

I know personally that this herb is execelent in humans for upper respertory problems, it also works to build up the area, making it easier 2 fight off colds and flu. I have used it for many years and find I get no more than 2 colds a year since starting to use it. Also after recommending it to my best friend who has suffered asthma all of her life, she was able to reduce the amount of inhaler she uses.

I take it in tincture form, I have about 10drops each day in a small amount of cold water (tastes awful), and when I'm suffering with a cold I increase the dose to 20 drops in water 4 times a day. I also give it to my 10 yr old daughter but at half the quantity.

As I said I have no idea if it can be used on bunnies and would love to find out more about it

would you like to see the effects of homeopathy on an incurable ultimately fatal disease in a dog?
i have just posted on a couple of other lists of my tikki's story and would gladly copy it over to here if you would like to see the results!
he's not out of the woods by a long shot but he is still here months after the statistics said he should be!
lots of photos, some of which are not pleasant......

I went up town at lunchtime to search out echinacea, for Santa's snuffles, I think putting it in water is going to be easiest. I found 2 liquid forms - one called Elixir and the other called Tincture. I didn't know what I was supposed to get so I thought I'd come back and ask here first  Does anyone know the difference? I'm afraid the waffle on the packaging looked fairly gibberish to someone who doesn't know about these things :?

I haven't used echinacea with rabbits, but have done with mice. I buy Natures's Answer E-Kid-Nacea, as it's mild, alcohol free and fruit flavoured. You can get it in some health food shops, and online.
