  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spot on

Do you mean like the Beaphar Spot on for mites/lice?
If so, I'd be wary about using anything containing Ivermectin 'just because'. Ivermectin can have nasty side effects if overdosed as it can attack the nervous system and cause all sorts of problems. I sadly lost a ratty after she was treated for mites with Ivermectin - she was quite old so I think it was just too much for her and I found her dead the morning after :( So I would only treat any animal with it if there was a strong possibility or I knew they definately had mites/lice/another parasite that needed treating with it.
If it's not one with Ivermectin then they can be a bit hit and miss anyway with how well they work.
If you want a preventative there's a few insect-repellant shampoos, and sprays for on the animal and/or the cage/surrounding area. I know garlic is supposed to help too but not sure if buns can have this (my ratties have garlic powder mixed in their dry diet because I have a few prone to mites, not sure if it works but it's worth a try!)
