  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My babys being done! I need some advice

Hey Guys and girls and bunnys :)

I need some advice,
My baby girl is having all her girly bits lobbed out on monday - Booohoooo... The vet says there is a 1 in a hundred chance I could lose her I am like arghhh ... but I know shes a stubborn monkey who isnt scared of anything so I know she will pull through...
But I just wanted to ask about what I should do when I get her home...
I know she needs to be kept warm and inside, and the vet says pineapple juice I was laughing at that , but hey if thats what she needs thats what she gets.
But is there any other advice anyone has! ?
I will do anything and everything to make sure my babys ok and happy :)
Thankyou as always

Hi
Fresh pineapple/juice is good to help break down hairballs in bunnys but not necessarily needed post spay. After my Nala was spayed she wouldnt eat or drink for a day so i did mix some pellets with warm water and a little pineapple juice as i had some anyway. Ask the vet if you can have a sachet of recovery powder food in case she wont eat post op and make sure you have a syringe or two in case she needs to be syringe fed.
Keep her warm and quiet and something nice and soft to lay on. Ask if they do intradermal stitches so that she cant eat them and reopen her scar as well... alot of vets do them now and they are alot better.
hope she gets on ok.. let us know how it goes

I think stiches are all done internally now so they can't get to them. My gp was done (boy) and I was worried he'd be picking at them.
Just keep her somewhere quiet, let her calm down. Be careful when picking her up, probably best to avoid it for a while.
If she's not eating try anything that would usually tempt her and maybe give the vet a call if you're worried.
Generally, they act like nothing's happened, but she may be a bit quieter than usual.
