  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Reaction to myxomatosis vaccine

A couple of weeks ago my rabbit had his biannual myxi vaccine. Tonight I noticed a bald patch developing on the base of his neck around a couple of scabs.
After doing some online reseach I have found that this may be a form of a rare reaction to the vaccine.
What do I do now?
Do I take that as a sign that the vaccine is doing it's stuff?
Should I get him checked by the vet ASAP?
As it's the weekend, do I take him to the 24 hour emergency clinic or can he wait until monday?

Gilo reacted to her VHD injection but it was the same day. I took her back & they gave her some cream for me to rub on the area & also a steroid injection to take down the inflamation. It might be worth ringing for some advice but after 2 weeks unless he is in discomfort I would think Monday will be okay.

:? Shouldn't need an emergency vet so long as he's ok and normal in everything else right now - eating drinking pooping etc. Give the vets a call on Monday, common in VHD injections, but I've not heard/seen it in Myxi

Piper had a bit of a lump after his myxi vaccination - the lump has now gone and since it wasn't causing him any discomfort (ie he didn't even seem to notice when I prodded it) I just left it alone. I just kept checking it to make sure it was getting smaller not bigger.

It quite common for buns to get scabs after their vaccinations :) If the scabs are dry and healing just keep an eye. If they are weepy then keep them clean and pop him to the vet monday.
