Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

My bun has a broken leg

When i went to check my buns last night i noticed that little Hamish was holding his front leg up and appeared to be unable to put any weight on it :( ....i dont know what happened ...he was fine earlier, anyway he got x-rayed at the vets this morning, just received a phone call saying it is broken :( , but as he is so small they intend to leave him to mend naturally, he is a little 9month old mini lop, been advised to keep him confined for a couple of weeks, has anyone else any experience of caring for a bun with a broken leg?

Hiya. Poor Bun. I am wondering why your Vet is not going to splint his leg? :? Do you know where the fracture is EXACTLY as this will make a difference to how it is managed. Also, if it is a COMPLETE fracture ie the bone is split into two then without the leg being TOTALLY immobilised there is a risk that the fracture will not knit together at the correct angle. This could leave your Bun with a deformed limb which may be painful/awkward to use. If he were my Bun I would ask:

1 Why the limb is not going to immobilised in a splint.

2 What pain relief will be provided DAILY if needed

3 Advice re calcium supplemetation. A young Buns bones are still growing and for a fracture to heal additional dietary calcium may be required during the recovery period.

If you have any doubts about the competence of your Vet in this situation I would ask for a second opinion from an orthopaedic specialist. Janex

poor little thing when i was a child we had a bun who has a broken back leg and our vet was useless and said it was sprained!!! but she had it pinned and lived to the ripe old age of 11! sending lots of bunny love to poor little hamish

hi, i think animals manage broken limbs much better than we do  :D when bailey broke his leg keeping him quiet was a nightmare he really didn't seem bothered by it or in pain. i'm suprised it doesn't need a splint (but i have no experience of front leg breaks)

hope he'll be ok :D

Hi everyone, thanks for your comments, yes Hamish has broken his front leg at the wrist, but he is doing really well, doing everything he was doing before, i am really surprised at how tolerant he is of it, i have kept him indoors and he is desperate to go binkying about the bedroom, but i am under strict orders to confine him so the bone can knit. He didnt splint him because he thought the bone was in a decent enough position already and it looked fairly stable. I asked about the extra calcium which he said was not really required as i feed him excel which in his opinion was all that was required. Although i think i will put a mineral stone in with him. I am just relieved that he is okay he really is a little cuddly bunny
