  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Daisys being spayed tomorrow,!!!Advice??

Daisy is going in tomorrow to be spayed.Iv prepared a indoor cage, the thing that im not sure about is,do they give you antibiotics after??And if so im frightened to pick her up in case i hurt her tummy???As when i give medicents i normally wrap the bunnys in a towel and hold them like a baby to give it??
Also Im worried in general, shes 8 months old and still a baby shes going to be in pain, will she be able to stand up,at first?Sorry for all the questions but al my bunnys came done already so this is new to me? :? :(

Most vets do not give antibiotics for a bunny to take home, most rabbits are given an injection of baytrill, this you may find will result in a scab at the injection site .. but not always. Sometimes it is not noticable until a few weeks post op.

Ask the vet to send her home with some metacam for you to administer from 24 hours after they give painrelief during surgery. It really does help ALOT! :D

Millie was spayed two weeks ago. She is also 8 months old. I moved her hutch inside and was expecting her to be a bit sleepy etc after her op. She really surprised me, and escaped out of her hutch within 10 minutes of arriving home. She ate normally and needed no further pain killers. Luckily, she only had one external stich - the rest were internal so she couldn't chew them. I think this was a good job as she managed to remove the one external stitch after 48 hours. She recovered much more quickly than Max who had a dental on the same day - he was very lethargic for about 5 days after, although I did manage to avoid the syringe feeding this time by feeding him moistened pellets at regular intervals throughout the day. Try not to worry.
