  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Weighing buns

I know the obvious thing to do when weighing a bunnie is to stand on the bathroom scales with you holding the bun and then deduct the combined weight from yours - but - is there any other method people use?

I bought a set of digital kitchen scales specifically for this purpose  . I used to do it on the bathroom scales but found that they weren't that accurate at the low weights of bunsters, even if you do it holding them then not holding them. My kitchen ones only go up to 3kg though so I was wondering about getting a set of postal scales (seen them on ebay) or something similar instead. Proper veterinary ones are around £85.

I'm lucky, only yesterday I brought Leonard to work to weigh him, weigh the carrier first then the carrier with him in it and he is 1,707.9 grams, yes, the scale will weigh to that much refinement. He is 10 grams lighter than the last time I weighed him, which is less than half an ounce!!!

Awwww, well one doesn't want to lose weight too quickly

Santa was weighed at the vets the other day, she is 940g
