  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Infacol - more questions!

Hiya! Well I've done a search and discovered that the usual dose is 2ml and then 1ml hourly thereafter if necessary. But, I'd just like to clarify -

Is there a general dose/kg (or at least give more for huge buns, less for nethies) or is it just a generic dose?

What is the youngest age bun you would give it to?

How quickly would you expect to see any effect?

Thanks! Alison x

(PS not for me, mine are all fine, just gathering some info for a rescue)

I dont like infacol,it damaged my daughters teeth, once they were through they were bad the dentist said it was the infacol its very sweet, wonder what effect it would have on rabbits teeth??

True, but kids seem to get given it quite often but bunnies may need it once or twice in a lifetime so there's probably not too much effect. I think it's just that it could be the lesser of two evils rather than always taking a bunny straight to the vet, the stress of which could disturb its GI even more, if there is a good chance that a dose of infacol could help.

True, If it works and saves a vets trip i surpose.
I stopped using infacol on my children after that and used dentonox instead which is herbal wonder if this can be used on bunnys?

I just looked that up - interestingly Infacol is listed as sugar free and Dentonox has 0.4ml sugar per 2ml dose!

its designed for bubbas so wont hurt the rabbit, and no it doesnt save a trip to the vets    it may just help a bit whilst you are waiting for the vets appointment and for a while after you have been!

Hi, a couple of months ago one of by baby mini lops{4 1/2 mths old} was showing all the signs of stasis. I was really worried so phoned a breeder I know and she said .5ml of infacol. I syringed water and pineapple juice and also some live yoghurt as she suggested. I did that all evening and by approx 3am he was nibbling on hay and parsley and almost back to normal by morning. I was really amazed as i was prepared to rush him to the emergency vet. You can never tell whether these things are going to work or not. Pam.

I give 1ml/kg as the first dose and if necessary another 2-4ml (depending on size of bun) an hour later. I would not leave a bun with abdo' pain without other Veterinary intervention for more than 2-3 hours. If Infacol is going to help it should have done so during that time. As long as they are weaned baby Buns can also have Infacol but I think any GI disturbance in a Baby Bun needs immediate Veterinary attention. I am a born worrier   Jane and Buns xx
