Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

VERY sore feet, how to avoid?

BlackCat

Hi everyone

I have a British Giant who has developed (as well as a tooth root abcess :() very sore patches on her feet - both at the hock and in the middle of the foot. Yesterday whilst I was grooming her I saw that in places the skin has cracked so that it had bled :(

The thing is, how can I prevent this? She lives in a permanent run with her mate. The run is about 10' x 10' (or something like that) and their hutch is 6' x 2'. As far as I can tell she only ever goes in the hutch to eat their food - she tends to live under it instead

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm a bit stuck :? I'm going to put a large tray under the hutch for bedding to go in, but other than that...?

Hiya. Firstly if the skin is broken I think you need to take her to your Vet as infection can so easily set in. I had a Frenchie who developed sore/caloused feet. They eventually abscessated  . Once sore hocks/feet have developed they can be so difficult to cure as they are obviously under constant weight-bearing pressure. Ensuring Bun is at an optimaum weight..ie not too portly!! and keeping the sore areas as clean as possible is important. Some buns will tolerate anti-pressure dressings (like a sort of corn-pad) on their sore hocks/feet but many just rip the dressings off straight away. Jane and Buns xx

Am I right in thinking people sometimes recommend Zinc and Castor Oil cream/Sudocrem for sre hocks? :?:
Yes!! And Errrhummmm...HAEMORRHOID CREAM   It has an antibacterial action and also a local anaesthetic. I only know cos I use it on Miss Bunny-Penny's sore hocks I would have NO OTHER reason to buy haemorrhoid cream.......HONEST!!  Jane and Buns xx

^ Well I know someone who uses haemorrhoid cream under her eyes (because of it's anti-swelling action, apparently), so I wouldn't worry  .

Under her eyes? Haha!

She's due to be going to the vet soon anyway. Hopefully my mother can take her tomorrow because I'm going to be out of the house 7-6.

She needs sorting for her tooth abcess too, so yeah :?

She's certainly not overweight - in fact a little bit under. I've been struggling to keep weight on her for the past eight months or so. She eats plenty, but it never seem enough.

I'm quite bothered by all this adding up.. It doesn't bode well :?

Everything's going a bit pants at the moment: My 2 1/2 year old mouse was put down two weeks ago, since then I've had Thumbelina with her abcess (and now feet), my guineapig Hugh has got *something* wrong with him (a mysetery illness) but is improving very very slowly with a lot of nursing, my hamster Sadie's allergy is getting worse (we still haven't worked out the trigger) and my rat Jennifer is just getting over resp. infection which seems to have cleared up but has left her with scarring in her lungs so she still rattles :( Oh my.

Just one of those months, I guess. Roll on March!

Having said all that, I am recovering quickly from my snowboarding injury so I can walk up stairs now :D it was so much hassle having to go up one step at a time! *stepstep* "ow" *stepstep* "ow" *stepstep*... I was a sight to behold!
