  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Urgent - rabbit with sore!

Young Bun
Hello, I need some urgent advice please

just feeding young daisy and noticed a nasty sore on her back shoulder area. Its about the size of a 20p. It looks quite dry. Shes still eating and seems her normal self but she is obviously not too keen on me poking around there. She had her VHD jab six days ago - could it be that? its not on the scruff of her neck but she wriggled so much at the vets (took 2 to hold her down) that i wonder if they got it in the right place?

I read the horrible post on fly strike - could it be that? cant see any maggots but...

I have taken a very bad photo

please let me know if we need to make an emergency vet run tonight or should we only go if she starts looking unhappy?
thanks very much[/img]

Hiya,

Don't worry :) It's quite likly that it is a reaction from the VHD jab, it's quite common for bunnies to get round scabs after them and they're surprisingly large compared to the little needle.

If it's dry and scabbed over then just keep an eye on it and it should heal well without a vet trip.

If the scan gets knocked off before it heals just make sure it stays clean, you can clean it with boiled water (left to cool) with a pinch of salt in.

If it starts weeping, a lump form in the skin or it starts looking red and swollen then you need to see a vet.

Flystrike is much more of a risk in summer when you do need to be careful of any open wounds.

update

Thanks for the advice. I took her to the vet this morning - looks like she has just been scratching the vaccination site. Got some anitbiotics and some cream to stop it becoming infected...the vet thinks she is going to be fine :D
